I Win "Moron of The Year" Award

Hi All:

I'm well into my first complete teardown/rebuild of a car -- my 62 Dodge Custom 880. It's been a lot of fun so far - just really taking my time and learning as I go. I've been a tinkerer for years (by necessity; I always had cheap crappy cars), but now I want to turn this old Dodge into a fun car to do some draggin with.

So, all that to say that I've cleaned out the engine compartment almost completely at this point. I'm going to part most of these pieces out, as I plan to buy a turnkey hi-perf motor and install it. Right now, I have all the ancillaries out and tagged, and am down to the block (heads off, etc).

BUT, I think I've pulled a major SNAFU. When I parked her (her name is Lucile), I left her in NEUTRAL. So, now I am trying to muscle off the main bolt (I know that's not the techical term, but it's the big 1 and 1/4 nut that's attaches the pulley to the crank). Of course, since GENIUS here left it in neutral (yes, it's a Torqueflite auto), when I go to working on the nut, I just turn and turn and turn the motor. Which is good if you're trying to show your wife how the inside of a motor works, but bad if you want to get the &^$#$#^ thing off.

SO, I can't think of any way to get it off --maybe I am really showing my amateur nature here, but without power to the tranny, there's no way to get it in gear, is there?

Any help, suggestions, laughter, ridicule welcome!!

Thanks,

dougiefresh

Re: I Win "Moron of The Year" Award

first of all the pulley comes off when you take the 6 bolts out of it. its alittle tight on there but you should be able to pry it off the balencer. which is what that botl and washer holds on. second you should be able to throw it in park. the most you would have to do is rock the car alittle bit. if that dont work try to wedge something in the flywheel. it sounds stupid but it works. ive done it on my 440. it shouldnt hurt much if anything. well good luck and let me know how it turns out.

Hey 71 -

thanks. so, if I have a big puller, I should be able to yank off the pulley? I've already taken out the six bolts surrounding it.

the tranny is a torqueflite pushbutton, and unfortunately doesn't have a "park" setting....on the same principle, would I be able to rock it into drive?

Thanks again,

dougiefresh
