Help Launching 98 Cobra

I have a 1998 Cobra Conv. with a K+N aircharger, and Flowmasters on it. My friend recently got a 2001 Mustang GT conv. Of course we raced about 4 times, and split. We did not race that far (almost 2 thenths of a mile), but after driving his car, I feel like it should not be even close. The thing is he has an auto with traction control, and I have a stick. I am spinning through the first 2 gears. I have only had the car for 2 weeks. What do you do to control this? Do you ride the clutch out? Dump it at lower RPM's? Please help. Thanks!

What's the condition of your tires? And what are they?

Re: Help Launching 98 Cobra

Don't rev to high on take offs unless you have tires that will stick through it. What kind of tires do you have.

Don't ride the clutch. Don't floor it, or get better traction.

I am not sure how good of a tire for traction it is, but I have Goodyear ZR45'2 in the rear. They look brand new, and they are 245/45/17's. I think I revved too high coming out, but it seems that even if I come out easy, and then floor it, they still break. Then if I power shift into second, and continue spinning.

Get some drag radials, they made a world of difference for me.

Stock BFg's suck. At least they royally did on my 98gt when I got it.....Spin! Spin! Spin!...........My Kumhos suck too right now. Get some street slicks/street race tires and you will really feel a difference.......Micky T or Yokohomo make some ok ones....The other guys here know more about brands than I do...

Re: Help Launching 98 Cobra

I will have to look into the tires. How do you normally come out of the hole though? 2000RPM dump? I think I am off coming out of the hole itself other than the tires too. I cannot accept being beat by a stock Automatic GT.

Re: Help Launching 98 Cobra

Why do you 'dump' it? The object is not to spin the tires, but be on the edge of slip so you can get the max acceleration....

learn how to drive.
