Looks like importation of R32's is no longer

Something just crossed my mind, that being, that in April when these car importation laws hit the streets, baniing importation of all pre-94 cars, R-32 Skylines will not be allowed into the country (But we will still have the R-33)

I heard today from a reliable source that

A. R32 will be out period....they are pre 94
B. ALL R33s will be unable to come in...they do not meet the frontal impact regulations in relation to crumple zones so despite the fact that they are stronger than an ox and have airbags in Spec2 they dont fold up like a tin can to the satisfaction of the moronic twerps at LTSA who would probably have difficulty identifying the front of a car from the rear.

oh bloody hell!!! Whales too????? I guess since I already have my whale, I shouldn't worry but it's seems hard to imagine a Honda civic or similar being safer in a crash than a whale. Have a look at some of the crash test results on the LTSA website some time. One that comes to my mind right now is the Pulsar - it didn't do all that well, but it's still sold here, cos it's a new car sold by a new car dealer.

hmmmph.

Didnt the R32 GTR's pass aussie crash standards? Er.. and Motorex is importing them to the states too.

Hmm I guess all Mitsi EVO's pass the test though, as do Supra's, 300ZX/s er.. anything that was sold in Aussie or the states?

Dont take this as gospel...it is only what I was told (albeit by a good source)

LTSA couldnt care less about how well they stood up to crash tests done by Motorex for example.
What they are looking for is crumple zones which are not built into R32s or R33s.

i.e. panels such as inner guards etc are built with a corrugated look (pre weakened) so that in the event of impact they will compress and absorb the energy of the impact.

I doesnt take a rocket scientist to figure that a lovely wee Toyota Echo with crumple zones is a FAR FAR less safe car than any R32 or 33.

So lets be realistic....this is just another way of removing youngsters from high performance cars. In my opinion not such a bad thing if it is going to take cheap EVO1s and 2s and early WRXs away....remember guys it aint just Skylines.
Right now there are 17 and 18yr old kids getting into these things purely and simply because they are cheap....take them away and they cant afford a performance car for a while...probably about the same time it takes them to learn to drive!

If this offends anyone....there are exceptions to every rule but in general the very young drivers in high performance japanese cars have bugger all driving ability and a mindset that goes along the lines of "Possum can drive like this so why shouldnt I"

i completely agree with you Ray. it great that it gets the teenagers out of cars like that. but it still sucks that we aren't going to be able to get them for ourselves other than what is already in the country(that number will decrease as things happen to them)

I hope that isn't correct.....I mean just looking for crumple zones in imported vehicles and nothing else just seems like a totally oversimplified criteria for determining which vehicles are safe for our roads and which aren't. I totally agree with your last comment.......I had hoped (in vain it would seem) that the LTSA would be smarter than that.

bwahahahahahahahahahahah :hehehe:

Anyway, MattyG, you were hoping for rational behaviour from the LTSA????????? In what universe?? I agree it would be nice if they behaved sensibly, but I don't see it happening.

But come on guys, it's aimed at protecting the profits of new car dealers, and that's gotta be a good thing, right????

right?????

right???????????

.....guys?? ......

According to the language of the law, if the cars met Australian fontal impact standards then they would also meet New Zealand's. That was also confirmed via a conversation with an inside source. Now I don't know if my source is 100% reliable but he has not been wrong yet.

So now that is a good thing because the R33 met those standards. Whether or not that will save the R32 remains to be seen but things are in the works to test that bills language as written.

Well that would be sensible. If they didn't accept that, then really they ought to crash test every car out there, so we can actually get the cars we want, instead of just pulsars and echos

What amazes me is that they want the front to crumple they way I see it explained. That would be a very bad thing in a frontal impact as the large metal objects, engine and or gearbox will be pushed through the fire wall into the cabin! Ummm hello but fuck that noise!
