Good tips for stripping acrylic tamiya

Yes! I got the tips from my local hobbyshop.
I got an old collection of kits that I want to restore, most of them is covered with acrylic tamiya clear which is a mistake from the past. So to take out the acrylic color, I dip the car in a container filled with detergent water, yes detergent water to clean your clothes, like ATTACK or Persil, etc. Most of these detergent are highly concentrated to clear out spots in our dirty laundry.

So I tried the method, dip the car covered in acrylic, waited aroud a day long and walla....the body is back in original condition ready to be primed again.

You can also use ofr both acrilycs and enamels caustic "sosa", dont know the word in english, its sold in a bottle in pieces its a kind of really strong detergent, but instead of a day... you need 3/4 hour or so, after that... a toothbrush and... all ripped evendecals, but you MUST wear gloves and try not to smell the gas, and also be carefull when using the toothbrush on thin parts, two days ago I broke a wing of a Fiat Abarth 131 rally eventhough it was my 6th time or so, so... BE CAREFULL, besides of that... its a really good technic.

I used it on the abarth cause its a model from early 80's and the decals were.... well, a sh... so the colors where really bad, they were broken apart... so... I'll do a street version of the car in bright red, I'll post pics when I finish it.

Do you mean caustic soda? That sounds kinda strong, but if it works who am I to argue.

I use oven cleaning products like Mr Muscle to remove acylic/enamels/silver plating. Just submerge the painted/plated parts in a sealable container for a day or so and watch the paint come off! Most of the time, I do not need to scrub with a toothbrush, only in stubborn, hard to reach areas. You can even use it again.

I use caustic soda and it works great, but it isn't a strong detergent, it's an acid; so be careful and wear gloves and eye protection when you clean the model with it or you will lose your fingers and eyes.

sometimes you dont need to use much the toothbrush. An yes, caustic soda, and its really strong, as I said and also inservible has said, wear gloves, eye protection for fumes and also try not to smell them, but you can leave the body in the caustic soda with water for 1/2 an hour or so without worring about it, I mean no need to be the whole time looking at the model, meanwhile the abarth... I was playing colin mcrae rally 4

At the begining dont use to much soda til you get to it, its better that after 3/4 an hour the paint still is there and even with toothbrush, than get a melted body, dont you think??? if after the time nothing.... throw more soda.

It doesnt work for lacquers so if you want to remove something acrilyc that's over lacquer... dont worry, at least the two times that I've done this the lacquer remained intact.

Why not just use Castorl Super Clean?

I've never tried it, caustic soda is really cheap, can remind the price but... really cheap, and with a bottle of 1kg.... I can strip toons of cars I readed it on a model book several years ago, never had to use it since last year, but.. as it worked well.... never used any other thing

CSC is 1 gallon for like 6 bucks USD.. Can be reused many many time's too!

the soda I think that were only 2€ or less, wich are 2'4USD, cant be reused cause its a bit difficult to store it with the water, but... with the 1kg... you can get litres and litres , anyways, like its said in spain but translated literaly to english, every master has his book, so... everyone has a way to do the things, but now the readers of this thread will have more options to take out paint

I'm surprised how many people still insist resorting to dangerous chemical warfare to strip paint.

Tamiya acrylics will remove with any ammonia-based window cleaner. Nowhere near as dangerous as caustic soda, oven cleaner, Castrol Super Clean, whatever. Not only is window cleaner far safer, it's far less expensive. All acrylics except for Testors Acryl seem to be able to be stripped with window cleaner. Window cleaner works well to clean the airbrush as well.

Even 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol will strip House of Kolors lacquers, and I've heard it will work on Tamiya TS sprays. Castrol will not strip TS; Polly S Easy Lift Off, brake fluid, or oven cleaner will work on TS sprays.

Personally, it's been years since I had to strip a paint job. Minor problems can be dealt with using sand paper/polishing pads.
