Transmission Noises
I just bought a 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis with about 100k. Very clean, well cared for car. It is for my mom to knock around in.
The only problem is, when it is shifting into gears especially overdrive, it makes a sound like it is hitting wake up bumps or crossing a cattle gaurd. I put Lube Gard in with the fluid this morning and drove it about 20 miles, no change yet. Any suggestions? |

Re: Transmission Noises
The problem you describe sounds like a bad torque converter.

Re: Transmission Noises
Do you still have the problem? 4th to 3rd downshifts that are harsh engagements into 3rd (@32 mph) are a shift solenoid. There is a TSB on it to replace solenoid with new OEM#. For as many as were out there, too bad it didn't become a recall. If you have this problem, look at the mph. When decelerating around 35mph, wait for it to shift to 3rd. If you don't and give it throttle, when it misses, you'll hear a loud metal cluck, plus you'll jerk in the seat. Repeated jerks leads to trans repair. If they don't change the solenoid, then look for the problem to come back and another rebuilt trans down the road.

Tranny flush
Sounds like moving over rumble strips? Sounds like the torque converter, but it may not be bad......just old fluid. Before getting into anything too complicated, I would have a technician evaluate the condition of the transmission fluid. If it's not too hateful, have a BG transmission flush done on the vehicle. Ford has a general Technical Service bulletin that recommends the flush for your problem. The TSB
was issued because dealers were misdiagnosing bad transmissions and replacing them under warranty....got to be expensive for Ford. In a vecicle as old as yours, a misdiagnosis would cost YOU a fortune. Hope this helps. |

Re: Transmission Noises
Although this isn't my post, it sounds like my problem. Now the trick will be to find a transmission tech who will honestly evaluate the situation. Thanks.

I spoke with a transmission tech two weeks ago and he said Ford products have this problem with transmissions. Quite often it turns out that some bolts have come loose because of the heating and cooling. If the transmission isn't badly chewed up the fix is to retighten the bolts.
