Very stupid questions!
Okay I recently picked up a 99 Neon from a dealer, and so far it's been a dream. No problems running, engine purrs, great car. Now, this morning I get in and the SERVICE ENGINE SOON light comes on. Not sure what's happening. I get on the internet and read, find out about codes, and as it turns out I'm getting:
code 12, direct power from the battery to PCM or something has been disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles code 43, a single or multiple cylinder misfire Judging from internet search after internet search, I guess my first thing to do is to change the spark plugs. I can find some information on how to do that in general, but when I popped open the hood I had NO IDEA where to find them. Where? Where? And are they hard to replace? |

This is pretty basic stuff but everybody who works on cars, including myself , had to learn sometime. However, if you're that new to the mechanical side of things, I'm wondering if you have the tools to do the job. But assuming you at least have access to tools, the first thing I would do is go to a auto parts store and get a shop manual for your car. This book has alot of good info and will help you locate the desired part on the car and how to remove and replace it. The level of detail they go into varys but is usually pretty good. As far as telling you where the spark plugs are, look on top of the engine and you will see 4 spark plug wires (flexible black rubber coated). They will probably be partially covered by a big black plastic air intake snorkle. The spark plug wires snap onto the top of the spark plugs which are screwed into the engine. You will need a spark plug socket, a ratchet and a extension. The spark plugs are in a 4-6 inch deep hole. If this sounds like too much work, I would seek out a garage or a friend who can do this for you. Good Luck.
