"1994 brought safety advances and an LX version of the Civic sedan. Having said that, I remember that Murray tested most competitors including the F40 during the design process of the F1 and the Ferrari made him realize that a large displacement was better to turbocharge.

Then the ratio power to weight had to be better than anything else and the weight target was set at 1000kgs (missed by 1.8%...) hence the final output of the engine...but who was first to breach the 100 barrier ?

After a quick search, it appears that the desmodromic injection of the 3.0l in the Mercedes 300slr ouput was 310hp...

For those of you who are having trouble reading the bottom of the ad, I re-typed it verbatim:

Nice ad...

The 2004 Subaru Impreza WR1 have 320 hp with a 2.5 liter engine.
produceing 130 hp per liter. config is a Turbocharged Flat-4. 0-60 mph is an amazing 4.2 seconds.

yeah true, but it's not an NA engine, and there also a saab made for the pikes peak that had 800 bhp from a 2 litre turbo, and it did 0-60 in 2.5 secs
does it count? NO, you can turbocharge an engine to astrospheric power as long as you can cool it enough, NA is far more difficult

There's also the Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale that has a NA 3.6 liter V8 that produces 425bhp. Thats equivalent to just over 118bhp per liter. It's truely an amazing car.

A quote about the Challenge Stradale:
"Fine tuning is how the engineers at Ferrari extract more power from the 3.6 liter V8. More horsepower is realized through a high-compression combustion chambers, polished ports, and a larger intake tract."

yeah. ten years of technology later!
a honda s2000 has got 240 bhp from 2 litres NA.
a suzuki gsx-r 1000 engine has got over 165 bhp/litre, well driven engines peak at over 170..

So, the raison why the Mercedes 300 slr top the 100 barrier in the early fifties was not because it was either tubocharged or even with compressor but because it did not run on standart gasoline (very usual at the time).
