91 CRX hf

I bought this car with 50K on it, looks like it just rolled of the lot for $3500. From what little I have read, this is a "base model" with a/c and a horn from a big rig, don't ask (but it does shock the hell out of people). Now keep in mind I am not planning on racing but I ain't dead yet. Is it worth it to invest in a cold air intake, k&n filter, bigger exhaust on such a "base" engine? At what point do the upgrades out weigh the potential of my new ride?

Re: 91 CRX hf

Well, if I remember correctly, the 91 HF engine are MPFI. Which is good - it's already wired up for a very easy engine swap up to the 1.6l. Pretty much plug and play. It'd bump you from 70 horse to 108, and then up from there with basic mods. I'm not sure exactly how much power you can get with basic mods on that engine, but every little bit helps. I'd say do the basic ones, cause even if you do the 1.6l, all those mods will bolt onto the 1.6l engine also, so you won't have to buy new parts like the intake and stuff.

i would use that money for a at least a dx or si swap with tranny. your hf has the longest gears known to man, and you pretty much cannot free up too much power to that engine. that engine and tranny is all about fuel economy. you should be able to find a dx swap for cheaper than a cold air intake and exhaust.

What are your plans for the car, do you want to race it or anything, or do you just want some more power. Swaps aren't too expensive if can find a friend to do it cheap, or do it yourself. Engines are pretty cheap for our cars. You have lots of options.

Re: 91 CRX hf

i wouldn't add anything to that engine. i would get rid of it and get another engine to drop in. if not you'll just have a slow car with tons of mods. no point in wasting the money.

No plans to race. However, you know when you are driving to work, traffic is a little heavy and you are at a light and some other dude is in the lane next to you...I guess what I'm saying is I'm not looking to do a 12 sec 1/4 mile, but I don't want to be completely humiliated every morning either. Just kind of not liking the idea of swapping out a motor/trans that runs tight with only 50k on it.

Re: 91 CRX hf

Ok. Now I am looking at a B16A1 + cable type trans + ECU for $1350 (used).
At www.nippon-motors.com/honda.htm
Will this do the trick? Or is there a head (walked in to that one) available that would give a moderate improvement, or is so much lost in the gears that my money is just better spent on a swap?
