5 spd shifting

I thought popped into my head the other day. What if I changed my punky 4-speed with a 5spd. Would it shift faster or smoother? Can any one tell me if this is true. Would the dx 5speed shift quicker than the 4 spd and would the si 5-speed shift quicker than the dx 5 speed? This stupid 4-speed shifts like a mofo and takes maybe 5 seconds to shift into 2, 3, or 4th gear.

Re: 5 spd shifting

Big differnce. The gears in a 5 speed are shorter than a 4 speed tranny. You will be able to chirp 2nd with a 5spd.What i do know is that the ex and si trannys are the same, and are made for the mpfi engines,,so yes there is more power in a si tranny

the 4spd is basically an hf tranny minus the 5th gear. and i can chirp 2nd with my stock hf. its just easier with the dx/si tranny.

you must speak of a Auto tranny the 4spd stick shifts just as quick as any other tranny the throw and shifter is the same.
4spd is great for AutoXing i just drop into 2nd and zip round corse you can go from a stop to 60mph in 2nd gear. the DX 5spd has shorter gears same with SI.
Yes you can swap in diff D trannys into the 4spd stick. I almost put in SI tranny before my B16.

Re: 5 spd shifting

what kinda of racing are you doing with it to make you want to change. i think it would be better in drag racing because you would say more in the power band i stead of dropin so many r's so if your drag racing do it go with the 5spd. .....thats just my take.......

Re: 5 spd shifting

I would go with a Si or ZC trans. There is a website some where out there that lists EVERY spec for Honda transmissions. If any one knows of this please post it, I been looking for it.

First off, it's a manual 4spd. I guess I should have been more clear. I have been told by many that my synchros are bad in both 1st and 2nd. They may be the problem so thanks to everyone. And by the way......just the other day, I followed a dx four door to school and I could barely keep up with her. She has a manual and I seriously thought that it was an automatic because she shifted so smoothly. Is the DX trans that quick and good? She just zoomed on out of there while I'm driving like a granny just to keep up.

One more question. What's a good (get to work and get home) shifting point to drive with everyday sort of thing? I shift around 2.5k rpm. Maybe I'm not revving her up alot, but it seems like she's pushing real hard. Just need the advice I guess!

Re: 5 spd shifting

You can shift at 2500rpm. In first gear I normally shift 3000-4000rpm cuz it is so short and then in the next gears normally not as high, in just normal everyday driving.

By the Way I got an Si tranny.

Oh well its not a bad thing if you can't chirp 2nd, or is it??? I heard some place that it actually wasn't good for your car, but who knows.

any time you lose traction when drag racing is never going to really help. to be able to chirp your tires in higher gears is all about bald tires and a good clutch. its just loosing traction.

Re: Re: Re: 5 spd shifting

I normally shift between 3,000-4,000rpm's

Losing traction means slower times

Any time the drive/power train is jolted from something like a "chirp" or incorrect downshift that is very hard on these parts. Slamming gears is not a good thing either. When shifting think the shift knob is an egg - gentle & smooth Quick but not fast.

Yeah I know losing traction means slower times but thats what I was talking about, the 2nd thing you said about how whenever its jolted its hard on the parts. I know its better to have traction, but I was trying to say that, but just didnt get it out right, lol.

So what you guys are saying is that you normally shift around 3000 to 4000 rpm? I know I can do that, but is it safe for the engine to shift at those rpms because it revs high for 2500 rpm. I just don't want to hurt it, but I do want to take advantage of the okay to shift at those rpms!

After reading Shaguar47's post at work this afternoon, I decided to try and force myself to shift at 2500RPM's on the drive home. I did it exactly three times before I said "screw this" and shifted like I normally do. I shift between 4-5k. I paid attention to it and most of my shifts were right at 4200RPM's. Some were over 5k, but only when I was accelerating hard, like getting on the freeway.

I've never been afraid to run my rev's high on my Si. It seems to eat 'em up!

cheers
