does anyone know if there is a pressure relief valve on a 2.3 engine, and if there is one where is it? I had the oil light come on in this motor.I checked the stick and it wasnt showing any oil.I put some in and got it home .I checked It again and nothing was showing on the stick again. There is no sign of leakage any where . I opened the drain and got oil, 5 or 6 quarts.I flushed the system and put oil and new filter in. Started It up . Oil light was still on and engine was running real bad noises, vibrations.I didnt have a pressure gadge so I unscrewed the filter and turned over the engine and got oil out the filter mount. So pump is alright I figure. I tighten the filter and car runs great. But oil light is still coming on at real low Idle,so low it almost wants to die.If I give it a little throttle light goes out.But it is running great.I shout it off and restart it and it is back to running lousy.Light is on full time and lots of vibration.I have done this with the filter 5 or 6 times with the same out come .Runs great until I shut it off . DONT FIGURE. Help is appreciated.Thank you. Have replaced sending unit and oil level senser is working fine.

Re: 1993 grand am 2.3 oil pressure relief valve
You might have the classic Oil pump failure. I would have the oil press check right away, and would not run it untill then.

my problem is very similar to this. when first started my car runs fine because the oil pressure gauge is past the half way mark, after driving a while the oil pressure gauge decends to about half, sometimes even lower. how can i get more pressure into the system?

Re: 1993 grand am 2.3 oil pressure relief valve
Purge your oil system and drive it hard for 10-20 miles , new gaskets , antifreeze flush , LOF after that your engines oil pressure should be more stable.
