I could use some 91 caravan help - engine water leak
I have a 91 Caravan that when I pour water into the rad, it pours out underneath as quick as it's put in. We have looked at the cylinder block and it seems fine. We have checked out hoses and clamps which also seem fine. Seems to leak out from the right side of the motor (we initially thought it was the left side - looks like there might be a slipjoint here? Maybe some more hose under there or something. Anyone have a problem like this? Something to do with the water pump or intake manifold? hate to have to do a bunch of investigative labor before I have a good idea of what it is. I hate to take the engine out unless I have to. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks, Lauren |

Re: I could use some 91 caravan help - engine water leak
What size engine?? 3.0L ?? If so, there is a weep hole for the waterpump on the right side of the engine at the front just behind the timing belt cover. If you look close it's a rectangular shaped weep hole in front of the block maybe 4 or 5 inches above the oil pan. Easy to replace, but takes time to do......2 hours if you've done them before........maybe 5-6 if you haven't??

Yes a 3.0L - Thanks so much on this! I will take a look for this weep hole and let you know how it works out.

check this--
Had a 3.0 that drove me crazy with a water leak also.. changed pum, checked seals.. no help.. finally found a small corroded area on the back of the water pump housing that when poked popped all the way thru.
The replacement cost is that of a new OEM pump, so, clean/grind out the corroded area, fill with JB weld (used 2 layers) and sand smooth.. so far has worked fine for over a year. The reason this corrods out is that there is a small pocket/well right behind the pump that when filled with oil/debris becomes a holding pool for water that will corrode the rear of the housing. Good luck Mike |
