Can I get check engine codes without a scan tool?

I was wondering if there is any way to get the check engine codes to display on a 90 lumina 3.1. I am told some cars allow you to do this without a scan tool; the procedure is often analagous to a video game code, i.e. put it through all the gears, turn the ignition to aux. four times, pumop the brakes, and so on and so forth.

Also, do I have to have the check engine light on to display a code??

Any help would be apreciated.

Diagnostics trouble Codes can be pulled without scan tools. Please keep in mind that codes do not necessarily point to the actual problem. Example- code 32 is the EGR System. there are components in this system that may trigger the code. As a rule OBD-I codes are vague and diagnosis is not always easy or simple. At least you are in the general area.
To pull the codes use a paper clip or short pigtail wire to bridge between terminals A and B on the diagnostic lead on the drivers side of the dash within 3 feet of the driver.. The lead may have a cover on it saying "Diagnostic Connector". After the paper clip is in place- turn ignition to RUN- DO NOT start engine.
Watch the "Check Engine Light" closely. It will begin to flash on and off. The first code will be code 12 the light will flash on- pause then flash, flash then pause, pause and then repeat the same cycle 3 times. Code 12 means the ECM is not receiving ANY distributor pulses- the engine is not running. Each code will repeat 3 times then pause, pause.
If the light continues to display code 12 it means no other trouble code is stored. If for instance a code 61 is stored ,it is a bad Oxygen sensor.
Just count the flashes between the pauses and you have the code.
Do you remember Morse Code? Almost the same logic.
You can also take your car to Auto Zone and have it done free.
A simple scanner is the way to go.

Thanks.

thank you very much for your help, I will try that later tonight. Regarding Auto Zone, I wish I could just take it in there, but I live in a rather remote area in the UP of Michigan, and i bet its 200 miles to the nearest one.
