Engine lite came on for the first time!

Any idea why I would have an engine lite come on after 10 years? I have a 93 ford ranger. I have 62,500 miles on it. It just came on, on the way home. Drove it for approximately 3 miles after lite came on. Did not notice any change in running, no smoking, all guages showed everything is fine. Is there a mechanic that would give me a free diagnosis on just what the code means? Where would be a good place to start. I am not mechanicaly inclined. I do change my own oil though!

It could be a number of things (02 sensors/DPFE sensor/??), go to an AutoZone if there's one in your area & they'll read the code for you FREE. Then post the code here & someone can probably tell you what you need. Get the code read 1st, so it will tell you where the problem is instead of guessing & just replacing parts.

I love FREE! There is an Autozone only a couple miles from here. One note, the check engine lite hasn't come on again since I left the last message. Should I still get the code? I did notice I didnt have my gas tank cap on real tight. Would that have caused the lite to come on? Thanks much Splashoid.

They can't read the code without your CEL on.It was probably your gas cap ,but I'm not sure what year they started that.If the CEL comes back on go have the codes read & post them before buying parts.Good Luck!!

Thanks Gentlemen. It still has not come on since I noticed I didn't tighten the gas cap. I will go get the code read in the event it comes on again. By the way, on a totally unrelated note... I need to replace the thermostat. What (in your alls opinion) should be the "ball park" fair cost for that service at a mechanics shop? Does new radiator fluid need to be replaced too? Thanks. Matt
