Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

OK listen up. I'm totally not a big fan of DSM. My friend has 3 first gen eclipse and all of them run anywhere between 12-13 second range. They just keep breaking down. MY other friend has the 98 gsx and he had a crank walk on it. They're just terrible cars. Since the Evo has the same motor.....is it reliable? If its the same shit as the eclipse then i dont think i'm goin go for the EVO. Whos gonna pay 30k for something thats not reliable? I know that the MR's tranny is different since its a 6 speed and the trans is mounted on a different side so i wonder if thats a much stronger tranny than the reg. EVO? Someone fill me in on this cause i'm really considering to buy the EVO MR. My boy who drives an MR2 told me to stay away from mitsubishi. We all know that mitsubishi has sucky ass drivetrain. But anyways any info will help! Thanks.

Re: Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

Okay they evo has better parts and the block is bulletproofed. The eclipse is basically a cheap version of the evo since mitsu didn't bring it here until recently. It basically boils down to you get what you pay for. The evo can take lots of abuse cause the car they released is the same as the rally car but without the engine mods and if you watch a rally race those cars go through tons of abuse from jumping, consistant shifting, ect. Personally I think they will be a very reliable car as long as you know what your doin with it, cause if your a complete moron not doing you maintance and checking things when your going to drive it hard for awhile then any car you drive won't be reliable. Another factor is you need to know how to drive it. if your a bad driver you can expect to do damage to a car. so it isn't all on the car it is also on the driver/ owner of the car.

Re: Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

I know its in the driver buts its not always like that. Eclipse tends to fuck up no matter what.Even if you take care of it. There drivetrain is just garbage. I just hope the Evo wont fuck up. I know i'm not a bad driver at all, so that shouldn't be a problem. I never did own an awd car so i'm not gonna race it right away till i get used to it. Anyways thanks. Anyone else have any other input? The more the better!

Re: Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

Hmmm...funny... I put 135,000 miles and 200 1/4 miles runs as fast as high 11's on my 1992 Talon TSi and never broke a single drivetrain piece. The tranny just finally simply wore out after all that.

Most of the drivetrain problems are related to stupid drivers, not the car.

I dont know man. They had quite a few recalls on the dsm. Everyone knows that they're not very reliable cars. You're just lucky i guess.

Lots of cars have recalls, I'm not saying DSM's were perfect but some folks try to paint em as total crap and that simply is not true. I've had a lot more trouble/recalls with my 1996 Grand Prix GTP.

don't think all mitsu is bad because of the old DSM's.

3000gt vr4 trannie is like a monster. a guy holding over 700hp on the stock trannie.
blocking rings get bad on our cars after lots and lots of miles.
only bad i hear of the evo-8 is the clutch beside's that. don't think that all mitsu is gonna have bad DT

I think that Mitsu should have gone with a triple clutch system to fix the problem. The Subaru WXR STI has this, why not the evo? At least I think the STI has the triple plate.

dont even begin 2 compare... do u ever wonder why evos cost more than subarus (wrx's and STI's) - well theyre faster, better response, better handling, less understeer, tight turning circle...faster, and stronger...

WOW Hold up a minute. I don't know about you but the Evo does not cost more than the STI. The evo barely cost more than the WRX. The MRSP of the evo is Around $29,000 and the STI is around $31,000. why do you think that in all the 30K's or less articles in magazines the STI has never shown up and the EVO does. So Before you go and making yourself look stupid again, do the research.

yea and the funny part is that an evo can still beat a brand new sti even thoug it costs more lol

Re: Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

EVO and STI are pretty much equal in 1/4 miles times. It more depends on the driver and the specific car. EVO costs less than the STI, but the STI does have better throttle response around town due to better low end torque of the 2.5.

I was talkin about about talons and eclipse. My boys 97 gs-t fucked up cause his motor cranked walked. He told me its a common problem on dsm. So i did some research and come to find out lots of ppl went through with this. My friends 94 mitsu galant tranny busted on him when it had 65k miles on it. My other friend has 3 talons that run respectively between 12s-13s and they busted. I dont know if modifications had something to do with it but either way he wasn't beatin on it...only on track. I know lots of cars have recalls on them but most of them is not motor problems like mitsubishi.

Re: Whats the diff between Evo and the Eclipse GSX?

There is a few years on the 2g DSM's that have crankwalk, otherwise that motor is near bullit proof.

Again I put 135,000+ miles and close to 200 1/4 mile runs as fast as high 11's on my 1992 Talon with zero parts breakage. Now it's a track only car and runs conservative mid 10's and I've still not broke anything.

If you get wheel hop or have too sticky of tires/too strong of clutch you'll break stuff. You have to know what you're doing with these cars.

So what about new EVOs having a 10year/100000 mile powertrain warranty, the STI has what? 5/60000?

From what I have heard the EVO engine internals can hold up to 500whp no problem. The crank walk problem on the DSMs can be fixed/delayed by using a clutch override so you can start the car in Neutral without pushing in the clutch.
