Which,Why,What??

Hello guys and gals

I would like to learn how to play either the drums or the guitar but i cannot make up my mind. I cannot learn both now as i dont have enough time for both. For those of you who do play tell me some cons and pros of each. Which is harder? AS for those living in the SF bay area, do you know any good places to take lessons?

Aight, thanks for your time guys.

Peace

Re: Which,Why,What??

Hmm.. well, from a guitar playing, I would choose guitar. But my friend Mike is sick on the drums, and I respect both instruments. If you don't have a lot of time to practice, guitar is obviously the less time consuming choice (and will save your parents ears).

Re: Which,Why,What??

I play guitar, my roommate is a drummer. I don't know what to tell you really, don't take up any certain instrument to be cool or something, try different instruments and decide what comes naturally to you and is the most fun for you. I don't see how some people can play drums, I think if you're to be a good drummer you just have to be born with the coordination to do so. My roomate can drum off more complex patterns with just one hand then I ever could. However, in just a few minutes I could learn songs he would need weeks to learn.

if you got fat and/or short fingers, go drums. If you can't walk and chew gum at the same time, go guitar.

Re: Which,Why,What??

I play shitty-ass guitar, and semi-OK Alto Saxophone. I have a friend who could be a rofessional drummer, and totally respect those people. I think guitar would be harder initially though.

Well, I've taught myself to play drums and guitar (among many other instruments), but I would say to go with what you have a natural ability for. Neither of them is "harder" than the other, they both take practice and passion to play good.

Are you good with melodies? Can you instinctively tell when something is out of tune or when something is in the same key?

Are you better with beats? Do you find yourself paying more attention to the percussion elements of songs?

Re: Which,Why,What??

A bass is kind of an in-between for drums nd 6 string guitar too. On the one hand, You gotta play along with the key and mlody of the song (but not exactly), but at the same time, you work with the drummer to keep the beat going. You can play a hair faster than the music to get a "driving bass" feel. Check it out.

I resent that (as a drummer). Also, that "someone else" that has the quote in your profile is me. I feel so cool... someone has quoted me!

Re: Which,Why,What??

LOL!

Why resent it? I'm a drummer too. Tried playing guitar, but my fingers weren't nimble enough. I could do some simple three finger chords, powerchords...but that's it. I do quite a bit of bass, though.

i would definately go with teh guitar.... cause really u can actually play noticeable songs on it, and u can sing if u kno the words... its hella fun, and u can take it with you... try stick a drum set in ur back seat lol... and yes drums can sound kool if you play it right... you really need some kind of other instrament to play a song... so i would go w/ the guitar

Dammit. Couldn't quite finish my previous post because my cat came tear-assing into the room, knocked over a bunch of my shit (microphone stand hit me in the head too), and spilled my coffee all over the keyboard. Spent the last few hours whooping her ass (j/k) and disassembling, washing, and re-assembling the keyboard.

So anyways, I was going to say that you may also want take into considderation price and practicality. You can hit up a pawn shop and get a decent starter guitar and practice amp for pretty cheap, but you'll probably spend quite a bit more on a kit... Second of all, drums are loud... really loud. And they don't come with a volume knob, so if you live in an apartment or other setting where you can't be superfuckin' loud, then get the guitar... Drums also take up quite a bit of space.

Also, I love drumming. I'm pretty good at it, and it's alot of fun to play, but I find that unless you've got a band or something, sometimes it kinda sucks playing without any melody or bassline or anything like that, whereas with a guitar, you really don't need any other instruments to create a song or whatever.

Like I said though, both are going to require practice and passion. Without those, it's not worth it. When I was younger, my parents made me take piano lessons, and I had to play trumpet in the school band. Although I played piano and trumpet for years and years, I never got good at either of those because I wasn't really interested... neither of them really struck me as a good expression of myself. Drums, guitar, vocals, bass, etc. are though. I play guitar for several hours a day now... And not because my parents are making me do it (like they did with trumpet and piano), but because I love it, and it makes me feel good, thus I get better and better as time goes on, and I don't really have to work at it.

Oh well... hope that helps somehow. Personally, I say go with guitar...

Also, guitarists get more chicks!

WOW!! This thread sure kicked off fast. Well, thanks for all of your replies guys. I think I will try the guitar for now since I live in an appartment, dont really have space to put drums, and I guess they would be too loud. Also because without a band, drummers cant really play any songs really. Maybe later when I get my own house Il try the drums. I think those are the two most kickass instruments. Before my mom made my play the piano, but I just hated it. So I stopped. I guess i should go for a classical wooden guitar. What are some of good guitar companies and how much $$ am i looking at for a pretty nice guitar?

Peace

Thanks, once again

Re: Which,Why,What??

Well, pricing depends, as far as good guitars go, Taylors are nice, but quite pricey, on the other hand, I've always like Deans and Ibanez guitars, both of those are great bang for the buck. It's a matter of personal opinion though when it comes to guitars or any instrument, seriously though, don't play something because it's "badass" or convenient, play what you enjoy. I'm learning piano now also, just because I like it, and a piano is far from being as cool as an electric guitar.
