fast idle and overheating

i have a 89 929 the car has set for about 6 months rand fine before put new battery in car cranked it up and noticed that the water pump was leaking replaced pump and thermostat cranked the car and the idle was about 3000 steady would not come down noticed that it seemed like pressure was coming out of radiator fill did not have cap on after five min car was overheating all hoses and radiator are new can someone please help

The way to get rid of this problem is to bleed the cooling system from any air.
