i have a 2000 Z71 ext cab. My problem is when i turn left from a stand still it whines, it doesnt do it when i turn right or turn left while driving only when i parked or stopped and turning the steering wheel left. Is this the power steering pump going bad or something else, i thought if it started to go i would have a hard time turning left and right. thanks for any help

You have a typical problem with the 99 and 00 silverados. What you are hearing is the steering gear and yes it's bad and yes it's expensive. Mine has done it since I bought it and I have had not real problems with it other than the noise. It will do it when you turn right eventually. You can get a new one at Autozone for 200 bucks, rebuilt with core charge of course and a new one at the Dealer for over 400 dollars (I get parts for dealer cost, so I'm thinking they will charge you 700 bucks or more). Autozones are lifetime guaranteed, if your a do it yourselfer. If it doesn't bug you, live with it. If it does go out and you hit a car, sue GM so the rest of us can enjoy a recall. If you have some one do it for you, grab your ankles and take a loan for 700 bucks or so.
Oh yeah, it's the steering gear box, not the power steering pump. |
