Anybody here a Painter?

I have a few questions about primer that I need a little help with. I'm looking for a ceratin color, like a neon/electric color. I know it's possible to get, but I don't know exactly how to do it. I hate walking into the paint store asking stupid questions, since I'm a girl, I will get totally run over with the "do you even know how to paint? do you even know what kind of vehicle you drive?" questions.

Thanks

Yes I know what they are. The only thing I don't know is how to get primer that color. I actually worked at a body shop for a year, doing body work and a little primer/paint work. The only area I didn't do was primer and paint mixing. I guess I'll just have to go to a body shop and pay them to get it and mix it for me.

I'm also wondering why you want your primer that color, but try mixing some of that color paint in with the primer.

you color a primer to enhance the color of the covering paint beside promote a bond. for example if you have a white primer and paint black the black will be lighter than if you had a grey primer with black overlay.

Yea, but I mean, I am curious as to why she wants NEON colored primer.

That is correct, but the easy way to do that is to mix some of your paint in with your primer. So why is she looking for a certain color primer, why not just mix it?

Thanks for all of your replys. Sorry I wasn't so clear. The reason I'm just wanting primer is that I got a truck to work on, and it will be going through a lot of body mods within the next few months, or longer. I don't want to spend time and money on a full paint job until all of the body mods are complete. There is a huge dent in the bedside/passenger door that needs to be fixed soon, plus I will be shaving the door handles, tail lights, tailgate handle, front lights, mirrors, badges, etc. I'm not going to do everything in one day, and this is the truck I drive to work. I'm just wanting to cover it in primer until I'm completely done and satisfied with it. I know that if I want to paint it bright pink, I would use white primer. But I plan on painting it a totally different color. I actually haven't decided on the final color yet. I just want to do the primer in a crazy pink for now. When it's ready for paint, I plan on going over the whole thing again, sanding etc, and using the correct primer for whatever color I will go with. That's all I needed to know, if I can mix pink paint with primer and get pink primer.

Re: Anybody here a Painter?

You have several different options, unfortunately none of them include neon primer. As far as primer goes you're pretty much stuck with the basic colors.

I would not recommend driving your car in primer! Primer absorbs water and will eventually rust out your bodywork, plus over time it will come off on your hands and clothes as you brush against it.

I would recomend using a 3 stage paint. The 3 stage paint will allow you to prime the bodywork then apply the base coat color of your choice ("crazy pink"). Then when the bodywork is finished you can apply the color coat and clear coat.

You could also use a 2 stage paint over the primer since 2 and 3 stage paint are dull untill you clear coat them.

Another route would be to use a single stage paint over the primer but add flatener, this will give you a sealed paint that looks like primer.

Hope this helps!

Re: Anybody here a Painter?

Thanks! I just didn't want to have to paint it pink, cause I'm not staying with that color, but I guess I might have to. I didn't even think of the 2 or 3 stage paints. I'll probably end up doing that. Thanks for the help

whats up girl, PPG sells a primer that is tintable, meaning you just add a small amount of the base coat color (in your case a red which when mixed with the light primer will turn a nice pink) to the primer before spraying, if you can get to a local auto store that carries ppg brand paint supplies they should have it in stock, all you will need to do is add a small amount to your liking and there you have it. pink primer!
hope that helps out girl racer.
