96 lumina trans problem-Help!!
Hey , for about a week my car was shifting strangley, sorta hard till 40mph, then we started to have to rev the rpms up just to get it to shift from a standstill, and its overheating after 15 minutes of idle. the tranny wont shift at all, i tried some seafoam transmisson stuff and it worked for about a day, i changed the fluid which was brownish and the bottome of the pan was sludgey black and that didn't help either. hope the trans isnt fried. Now i have another engine and trans out of another 96 lumina, same year. Perhaps someone can suggest wheather its an easier job just pulling the trans or the whole engine and trannie, also would disconnecting the battery for an hour help. If u say unplug the puter, please tell me where or a general location. If you like you can send replys to: [email protected]

Re: 96 lumina trans problem-Help!!
The computer does control the transmission, so try unplugging the battery for 5 minutes. Then take for a 20 minute drive if it will move. I have noticed on mine a few times I had the check engine light come on when stopped the car would not move at all until I shut it off and restarted it, then it was fine.
its worth a try, also check for codes before disconnecting battery. Mark |

the sludgy black "stuff" is burned clutch material //// the computer
does control the trans/// if the ecm is not working ,,,the trans should fault to 3rd gear,,,, if it doesn't move,,,,,,,it's probably shot, toast, ect, ect replacing the trans is less hoses, wires, bolts and so on but it's no picnic either way you go. would be nice if disconnecting the battery would fix it !!!!!!!!! |
