Re: jdm mistake
Well technically any JDM engine isn't gonna be smog legal but I think you could get the B16 that came in the 95 Del Sol Si (b16a3?) and I think should be legal since it was over here in the states. Or the one out of the '99-'00 Civic Si. I'm no expert but just thought i'd throw those out. BTW welcome to the boards.

Re: jdm mistake
I don't see why it wouldn't pass emissions?! As long as everything is working. Where did you get your information?

Re: jdm mistake
Japanese emissions were nowhere near as stringent as those in the US until the intro of the LEV engines.
My guess is he's a californian in which case my understanding is it's near impossible to meet the smog requirements with a JDM motor. |

Re: jdm mistake
if you're in cali, they dont pass the visual inspection..they'll pass emissions just find anywhere in the country..its just in cali where jdm engines are illegal, that they cant get around that visual... if this is the case.. there's plenty of usdm b series engines out there..

what do they do? just check the engine code?? cuz if thats the case, i'd just engrave a 2 or 3 into the end and smear grease all over it

Re: jdm mistake
Actually you can pass smog. I have a friend who has a 88 Civic Hatch with a B16 and he passed it but had to go to the state referee. I think every major city has a referee around. You have to know what they look for. They look at the engine code and they look for the emissions control equipment for the car the engine came from. As long as you can point that out, then you can continue to the next step which is the actual smog. Also, the engine has to come out of a car that is your same year or newer. If you really want a B16, I suggest getting a Del Sol or 99 Civic version. I chose to go another route and go for the Integra B18B. They are USDM engines and won't have any problems passing smog as long as you have a the aforementioned equipment. The B18B/C are more powerful than the B16 anyway.
