I just got a 95 Tahoe.
Can anyone please tell me what I should expect for fuel mileage? I'm getting about 11.5 around town right now. It's not a vortec or not, I would really like to hear what others with a 5.7l tahoe are getting for mileage I've posted here about power concerns, and since having headers and exhaust installed, it makes a big difference in the feel around town. The other thing I've noticed since adding the headers is it bogs from off-idle Wide Open Throttle (sometimes so badly it nearly dies). I also put on a helix spacer, I'm thinking about taking it off to see if that does anything for the bog off the line. I had a 4.0ho Cherokee before this. I was used to pretty decent power, I'm finding this experience disappointing. I mean, when I pass on the highway, it takes nearly 20 seconds to got from 60 to 70 mph (the gearing is another thing that seems less than ideal) I really just need an idea if the mileage is what I should expect. If the mileage is less than average, that likely means something is wrong and that may likely account for the power issue. Thanks. |

Two words: Tune Up. I had this problem on the way to daytona a few weeks ago. I was getting hesitation on hills at interstate speeds. I had the truck for 30k (203k on it total). Anyways, plugs, wires, rotor button, and cap later, runs like a charm with a lot of restored power and fuel efficiency. The contacts in the cap were helacious and a few plugs were dirty. The total tune up cost me $200 but unless you get things at cost its more like $400 retail for the good stuff. Im getting about 16mpg/city and 21mpg/hwy with 315/75/16 tires. Not too shabby.

Re: '95 Tahoe - please assist if possible
My 94 gets 13+ city and around 17 highway. Remember tune-up includes setting the timing. There is a connector under the glove box that needs to be pulled apart when u set the timing.

I have to echo what GTR said, tune up, I think I have suggested that to you when you posted about being disappointed with the off line jump after you installed all your new upgrades. Fuel pressure is very crucial to all 95 and newer rigs, change that filter every year - no joke. Spark plugs every 2 years, basic maintainence. A fuel injection service is a smart move too. I am looking at the airaid spacer, different design. Our Tahoe, 95 4x4, gets 12.5-13. A mix of highway and intown. I want more so I am looking at a good all-season tire instead of the Big-o bastads that are on it. Synthetics in the gear boxes and tranny, I have not made the switch, but I will wait till I go back to work at the shop in the summer. The Tahoe gets less when I drive, Mr. Lead Foot, when my wife drives it does better. I am not disappointed with the get up and go passing speed, when have you had a trans service. The jeep will seem more torquey, the 4.0 straight six is a torque engine, the Tahoe is way heavier, but has a higher towing capacity. Because of the v-8 and higher H.P., it is a trade off. If you want more torque and h.p. look into a chip, but do not expect an increase in fuel milage.

Trade your 95 Tahoe for a 96 Tahoe or newer. The difference in performance between a 95 and a 96 is similar to the difference between a Pentium 2 and a Pentium 4 Intel processor. Between bias belted and radial belted tires. Between the Dave Clark Five and the Beatles. Between petroleum based oil and synthetics. Between a house built of straw and one built of brick. Between night and day. Between... you get the picture. TRADE.
