Strange ( to me) 4 wheel drive action 88 silverado
I have an 88 4x4 with 160 k miles and the usual replacements and repairs. Lately I got it stuck 2 times and noticed that when stuck only 2 of the wheels are driving. The drivers front and pax rear do all the work and the others don't do anything. I had the front right axle replaced because it broke but it did the same thing once before the replacement. Today when I got it buried I finally put it in LO range and it seemed to walk right out. Does that make any sense to anyone? I know a lot about cars but 4 X 4 is new to me. The fluid levels seem to be ok in the front transfer case . Any ideas what to look for here?

Re: Strange ( to me) 4 wheel drive action 88 silverado
Stock 4 wheel drive is really only 2 wheel drive. (one in back and one in front) The only way to get all 4 tires to spin all the time, is to install lockers in both the front and rear differentials.

Boy do I Feel Dumb, But The Fix Was Free
Damn now thats something they don't advertise on TV now do they? How hard and $$$ is it to install lockers on this beast? My primary reason is that its main use is off road in the woods ect. Thanks for the insite!

goto www.summitracing.com, look up the auburn posi unit for your truck - should be about $270, will cost you $100-$150 to install into the rear, this will lock up the rear and give u 1 tire in the front which should be enuf - I have a factory traclok in my ford and an open front, and I have an eaton ratchet in my blahzer and an open front and they pull circles around my K2500 which is open/open to put a locker or lim slip in the front of the chevy transaxle is very expensive and not needed going to 4lo means u needed less engine and therefore less torque to move the tires so its a LITTLE better when stuck, a lot of times I find that applying a little brake when trying to get unstuck in the Ktruck tends to get all 4 wheels turning. |
