Unhappy Friday 13th = bad luck for my car

So, first, i was driving to school, and my radio wasn't working for some reason, then I went over a bump, and my car made a squeaking noise. (could not tell where it was coming from) I am guessing the suspension. And every single bump i went over made my car make the noise. There were a lot. And then on the way back from school it was magically gone. WTF. What could have been making the noise?

And if that was not enough, on my way back from school, the squeaking noise was gone, but there was another noise, my car started to make a squealing noise while i was accelerating, (it was not that loud, but it was there). The only thing I could think of was timing belt. But the previous owner said he replaced them at the 60,000 mile change and I am at 75k right now. He better of not been lying. I hope it is not the timing belt.

Thanks in advance

Now to go and figure out why my radio is not working.

Damn, I'm not even driving my car today. I would like to give a shot out to my mom for letting me use her car though.

Try adjusting your power steering and alternator belt. Check them by pushing down on them... if you feel theyr loose adjust the tension by adjusting the screw. I had to do it a couple of weeks ago because it got cold here and made my alternator belt slip adn sqeek like crazy.

Re: Friday 13th = bad luck for my car

Timing belt cant squeal or make other noises. It cant slip. Its a cog tooth type belt, not a v belt.

My car often will make strange noises, then magically stop. I decided years ago that I wasnt going to chase down every noise that I heard. I could never find them anyway, then they would go away on thier own. Now I just wait for the affected part to fall off, then there is no question about what I need to fix But you should get your ball joints checked anyway to be safe at least, and if they need replacement its free.

I called the 800 number for mitsu yesterday, and they said the previous owner have the ball joints taken care of, but I am going to try and find out on monday if they just "inspected" them, or they actually replaced them.

BTW what are the symptoms of a messed up ball joint.
And is there any thing else that could squeal, while under acceleration.

Re: Friday 13th = bad luck for my car

Also keep in mind that the replacement balljoints fail too Dont ask me how many I'v gone through. I keep a spare set in the garage. And since this is a safety recal, they have to replace them no matter how many times theyve done the recall. Now, if they have like 80k miles on them they can argue that its normal wear, and rightly so. But if they were done recently I would make them do it. But its a judgement call, and thats the tough part. Hopefully the mileage makes it a clear decision.

I'm assuming this is a 2g. To test you need the car off the ground, so you can lift the tire striaght up, but still see the ball joint. Its on the straight lower control arm, called the Lower Laterall Link, and is attached to the sprindle, jsut inside of the tire/wheel. Have some one pry or lift the wheel while you watch. If you can see the gap between teh arm and spindle chaging (the rubber boot will make it obvious too) its way out of spec. The dealer has to measure with a dial indicator to check, so it may not be this obvious. But I find that by the time you can notice they are bad, you can see it.

As for the squealing, I would suspect any of the v belts. AC, PS, or the alternator/waterpump (which also drives the PS). For the NT cars, I dont know how the belts are setup, but it will be a v belt thats squealing. Bad baerings in an accessory can also squeal.

WOW!!!.. it's good that you guys brought it up. cause i've been having exactly .. well.. not sure if it's exactly.. but same kinda squealing sound. it only happens whenever i acelerate up and over 4000RPM. it's a very high pitch sqealing sound and not too loud but still noticible. i've had my car inspected regularly at the mod shop.. and gues they never found anything unusual. maybe because i never brought it up? i've always thought that it could just be some friction between the belts so nothing to worry about.. but now that more than one of you brought it up i am starting to worry.. should i mention that to my mech and have him checked next time i go in?.

i just went to the DSM dealer today and turned out that fuckers wanted me to make an appointment to replace the damn ball joint. so i am going in on tuesday. hope that they don't fuck around with anything else other than replacing that damn defective design ball joint shit!!
