Re: 1997 grand am gt will not start
What exactly is the car doing and not doing? When you crank, does it just click or does it turn the engine over? Does the security light come on and stay on? Did the computer return no codes (except code 12)?

check alternator or ignition control module<<<<<<<<an ignition computer get it tested first before you replace it take it off an take it to autozone to test it

Re: 1997 grand am gt will not start
Hold off on the computer! A mechanic said mine needed a computer ($465.oo) Took it to a pontiac dealer who replaced the ignition switch from a recall
for free and so far no problems since! Just dont go out and get a computer, check all possibilties! Saved me $465 |

Re: 1997 grand am gt will not start
start with the basics an engine needs 3 things to run it's probably got air so that narrows it down a bit. check for fuel pressure and spark. if you have fuel pressure and no spark check the injectors with a noid light. if they aren't pulsing(light blinking) check the crank position sensor and the cam position sensor a good mechanic with a good scan tool should be able to check these in no time at all. oh yeah check the fuses before you do anything if all that stuff passes then i'd me a little more convinced the computer might be shot. a computer is a very expensive part to just throw at a problem and 90% of the time it's not the problem. don't let this guy rip you off. if you really think it's the computer give it a couple good smacks and see if it starts working if it does then go ahead and replace it. you'll probably need to get a new computer reprogramed at the dealership with a tech2 anyways. good luck i hope it's something simple
