83 civic needs power
First post, let me know if I break any rules.
There's very little precedent for 2g engine swaps, and I've seen a couple guys here mention a dual sidedraft carb setup. Problem is, my car has 250k on the original engine + trans, and unless the timing is set all the way back, it pings like a mother going up hills. I've located a 35k mile b16a1 with 5 speed cable trans, ecu, axles and hubs for 1500. Can't find any info on motor mounts though, for any 2g swap. Also, I don't know how tricky the fuel system is going to be, for conversion to FI. The car's very clean, I bought it from my friend who was the original owner. I want to make it a sleeper, can anyone help? 1983 honda civic 1500dx hatchback custom welded 2 1/4 pipe, stainless magnaflow 3 1/2 out Pictures when digital camera arrives |

swap
dude for the mounts there like 500 bucks at hasmotorsport, I think for the 2nd gen civic you have to have custom made halfshafts, but someone correct me if im wrong.

hasport mounts
I called hasport about the mounts, and they told me that they don't manufacture them, I would have to have them custom made.
About the axles, I don't know. I was told that 86-87 teg axles and hubs would work, but they would space the offset about 1" farther out. Anybody know? The track is like 2 1/4" wider on the teg than my car, so it sounds about right. |

Re: 83 civic needs power
i have an 83 civic 1500 with 249k miles, the problem i had was it wasnt getting enough air with the stock setup and it would choke out every time i put the pedal to the floor so i cut the lip off the intake dish and that solved that problem, as for the pinging, i just played with the timing untill i could gun it through first and second without any noise and it seems to be alright. for engine mounts, they should be realitivly accessable but i admit that i havent actually looked for them myself. if you are going to do an engine swap you can use any honda or acura engine 1987 or older, which means that the acura 1.7L dual cam or a prelude 2L would be pretty good options, the problem with using a 1500 is getting parts for the old ones and it will still be a 1500cc even if you can. converting to FI is a problem but you can work around it, you will just need to find out the specs for the fuel pump on the engine u select and get an aftermarket inline pump or go to a wreckers and pull one off a car with the engine u use. basically u just want to duplicate the fuel sysem of the car u get the engine from. for your axels, there are plenty of cv places which will make you custom ones for a reasonable price, and they will be much stronger than any stock ones anyway

Honda
Hey, its going to be really hard to fit a B series engine in the 1500DX without relocating the radiator, some swaps that i have heard of being done are the J-spec SOHC integra swaps. you do have to get customly fabricated motor mounts (which is totally a drag) but i guess the swap works great and it all fits. i have even heard of people putting turbos on those....thats a pretty sweet sleeper right there.....hope i could assist somehow and i hope people are still checking this post!!!

Re: 83 civic needs power
wow Lang, that was an old post. well the engine you are thinking of is the D16A1 (D16A1 1.6 16V DOHC PGM-FI 1590 113hp@6250rpm 99tq@5500rpm '86-'89 Integra (USA), all other D series engines will not fit), you are worried about re locating the rad, well let me tell you there will be more work involved than that if you want to do this swap, the engine will mount with stick mounting positions but the biggest problem will be converting to fuel injection. it can and has been done, but not by anyone in this site with a car this old (that i know of) currently i am faced with the same option and will hopefully attempt it in the next year or so in a 79-81 Acord.
have a look at this thread to give you some ideas, it is talking about this swap in 84-87 civics but many of the same things will apply, the only differance is that your car will have a completly differant style ECU. http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul...d.php?t=199192 other than that there really is not much i can tell you, i'm in the middle of it myself Edit: i corrected the typo in case you are wondering where it is.

Civic
Hey, wow....so a B-series will fit eh? that sounds pretty phatty....anyone done one of these swaps yet? im really considering doing it...my car looks like CRAP but i have some civic Ex seats from a 98 customly fabricated into it, makes it a Much nicer ride.....does anyone know of which lowering springs you can put on these things? i want it safer, rather than just chopped springs...so, swapping the engine requires....what, replacing the whole fuel system...changing shift linkage? and moving the radiator?.....which engine will just swap right in without ANY problem having to do with the mounts? maybe not a B-series, i dont really have that much cash to invest....will and D-series engines swap right over? thanks everyone for your time!

Re: 83 civic needs power
oh, sorry, i had a typo, a big typo actually, i wrote "(D16A1 1.6 16V DOHC PGM-FI 1590 113hp@6250rpm 99tq@5500rpm '86-'89 Integra (USA), all other B series engines will not fit)" it should have said no other D series will fit. sorry about that. no B series engine to my knowledge will fit either but i just though i'd clear that up. the only D series engine that will fit w/o custom mounts is the d16a1. but like i said, have a look over that thread, namely the url's given on how to do this swap in an 84-87 civic, they will give some idea of what you will need to do. if you want to do this you will need a pretty good idea of what you will need to do beforehand because you may have to improvise a little.
