FORD trucker(s) ??

Ok, NOT considering the new F150s .(cuz I do like 'em) .. What "used" Ford truck would be the one to look for? Ya know .. something that Ford done right! Ya know, the preceding years .. something didn't quite mesh .. and the years after that (till now) .. just wasn't the same (too many changes??) .. but this one model year .. if you ran across it (and it wasn't too beat up) .. you'd buy it!

Cool 1978 Ford f-100

Hi, I'm new here but I would like to say a little about the ford f-series. I have a 78 Ford f-100 that I gave $500.00 for. I have had it for about 2 years and have had basically no problems with it other than a $15.00 coil and a $7.49 solenoid switch. I would'nt sell it for nothing I love it and i'm going to totally restore it. All it needs is a new bench seat but i'm trying to find a set of bucket seats for it. The only other things it needs is just a little tiny bit of rust on the drivers door where my arm hangs out the window the sweat from my arm has just barely started some rust, and i'm have a small bit of trouble with the wiring going to the taillights/stop/ts assembly. I am just about done except the manual with wiring diagram that I have has the print so small you can't hardly see it. But after that it will be in excellent condition. If anyone has any wiring diagrams or knows of any bucket seats either brown or tan please let me know. I hope I can chat and meet some new friends soon too.

Re: FORD trucker(s) ??

1980 has an unusual frame. Holes were cut into it to lighten the truck. Unfortunatly the truck flexs and when parked on uneven ground the doors bind. Even so I have two friends that own them and have real good luck with them.
Most importantly* get the 300 six. Not only a very good engine but one of the best built. They are easy to maintain and last a lot of miles.

Re: FORD trucker(s) ??

I've got an 87 ranger with 215k on it that's hit a deer, been thrown in a lake (partially submerged engine block.. no hydrolock), and hit a few other random things.... still starts up like new every damn time, and except for an oil leak, runs like clockwork. Trust me. I have tried to kill it... racing, mudding, being an overall bitch to it. Looks like ass, but refuses to die. It's getting restored this summer at my dad's request.

Re: FORD trucker(s) ??

Another thing you should be aware of is most older Fords cab mounts rust away. Most particularly the extra cabs.
Often an easy fix used is a 2X4 shoved between the cab and frame. Not a very good solution. Put a proper repair in your budget when pricing out the truck.
The bench seats also seem to sag in the older models.

Re: FORD trucker(s) ??

I own a 95 F-150 4x4 off road with 215,00 miles and can say it has been the best vehicle I have ever owned. It has the 5.8 engine and has never given me any problems other than what I would consider normal. It has seen its share of bumps and wrecks...rear ended twice...once pretty dang hard.. but I have always had it repaired. Best as I remember the most expensive part I have had to replace was the top ball joints and those at around 200,000 miles. I have read several surveys where the 95 F-150 was considered above all other trucks as the best used truck for the money. I've sure had good luck with mine, of course I maintain it really good so I'm sure that helps.

Re: FORD trucker(s) ??

I have a 95 also and it's good to me. I have a 300 and it still kicks along. I swapped out the manual 5 for a c-6 but thinking about the e4od. If I had to do it over, I would just get one with the 5.8 in it already and a e4od trans with an extra cab. If we had NICE 74-79 trucks or broncos I would definetly look into that but high rust content makes for bad conditions ....... good shopping.
