lowering vtec engagment
i was wondering if anyone in here had a chip that lowered their vtec engagement rpm's, and if you do how much of a difference does it really make, just thinking about it, it seems to me it would make a huge difference -- the reason i ask is because there is a chip out there that lowers the vtec engagement by 400 rpms and raises the redline 200 rpms, which would give me roughly 500 rpms more of vtec, is it as sweet as it sounds?

why would you want to lower it? if im not mistaken the stock actuation point is at 4400 rpm and that is too low allready, i think. anything lower and your loosing lots of bottom end and bogging down your engine. if i were you id get a vtech controller for like $150 and bump it up anywhere from 5000-5200 rpm. youll squeeze the most power out of the first lobes and when vtech does kick in if will pull much harder.

On a stock GSR, VTEC engages at 4875 and the secondaries in the intake manifold open at 5750.

Before you go messing with your VTEC setting, you should know that you'll have to change your fuel map to maximize performance. If you don't have experience with this area, you'll need some dyno/tuning time, which can cost you more money.

VTEC was designed for high rpm power. The main reason for VAFC are to tune chipped ecu's and modded compression and heads. Most chipped ecu's push the VTEC cross-over forward and change the fuel map. To see true gains from a chipped ecu you need some sort of controller to properly tune. VTEC controllers are also used with aftermarket cams. At lowered cross-overs on the dyno there is a drop in hp at the cross-over point. You want a consistant gain in hp to the peak not a drop at x-over.

My Civic's VTEC engages at about 6000 RPMs...should i lower mine?

Vtec KIcks in at 6000 RPM
I have a 92 gsr and the vtec kicks in at 6000 rpm's is that normal. Should it kick in a little earlier. Also when I am driving on the highway it seams like the rpm is running to high when I am driving 60mph it does about 3500 rpm. I just put a new clutch in it. Still doing the same thing.
Can anyone give me info. |

i had my vtec set at 4400 and when it kicked in you couldnt feel it you could hear it a little bit then when i went to go get my car tuned they reset it to 6000 and gave me more hp and a better 1/4 and know i can feal it 10x better and hear it even if i had ear plugs in. it feals like a 30shot
