I want louder exhaust

Okay so I finally got a Flowtech red hot glasspack welded on my 1991 4 cyl Nissan truck. It's a little deeper, but not much, you can still hear the engine almost more than the exhaust... all the muffler shops I talked to said that putting a glasspack on my truck would be so loud it'd be illegal. How come it's not super loud? I spend under $50 on the muffler and welding so that's alright but still I want it way louder!

Re: I want louder exhaust

having no mufflers at all is the only thing I can think of that will be louder than glasspacks.
considering it's only a 4 cyl, it's not going to soaund all that loud no matter what.

Re: I want louder exhaust

Why do you want the exhaust to sound loud? So you can piss off your neighbours?

i agree, when i was putting new exhaust on my civic i did it at my friends farm, well long story short i was headed back the second day to finish welding some parts of it that i only had clamped and one of them came loose and it was louder than hell for the entire 10 mile drive there, it was embarissing. but with the glasspacked muffler it wasnt near as loud, not by a long shot but it has a nice sound to it. the glasspack muffler will not nessisarily be the loudest one out there but it is still a 4 banger so its not gunna be that loud to start with

Not necessarily to piss off the neighbours, more just for the nice sound. I don't think I can go without a muffler, I have emissions testing (aircare) in the next month, and I have to do that every year or every second year. I don't want it ricey sounding but a little bit is okay since it's a regular truck anyways, I just want it to sound louder. I guess all the civics and stuff have more expensive mufflers on them! I only paid $20 for my glasspack haha guess you get what you pay for!

Re: I want louder exhaust

you could go for wider diamiter pipes, also go with no catalytic converter but since your truck is a 91 that would not be legal. aircare eh? u from BC then?

the converter often behaves like a second muffler, and makes the exhaust a lot quieter before it hits the real muffler. Flowtechs were intended for use with no converters.

If you want, look for a muffler designed to work with a converter (a cat - back system). They are engineered for a desired sound with a converter.

Finally, as its a larger displacement lower revving 4 cyl, it will sound like a combination of ricer- with- fart- can and a Massey Ferguson if you get it loud enough, no matter what kind of fancy muffler you have.

Re: I want louder exhaust

An idea may be is to take your ride to a muffler shop and have them take off the resonator and have it replaced with a steel pipe, this job is about 30-40 bucks

Yeah I live in Vancouver, B.C. Where is the resonator on a car... between the muffler and catalytic convertor?

Re: I want louder exhaust

yes the resonator is between the cat converter and the muffler usually closer to the muffler. it looks a fat bulge in your muffler. its an easy job just cut and weld

I'm going for Aircare emissions testing this week so I guess I'll ask one of the testers about how legal that is... what about making holes in your exhaust pipes I've heard that makes it loud but seems like it might wreck your exhaust system in the long run.

Re: I want louder exhaust

they will say no to the holes, they do not even like exhaust that has pin holes from rust. as for the resinator, dont ask dont tell is probally the only way to get away with it, i would suggest gutting the existing one out so they will not notice. that is of course if your truck will pass without it.

Running no muffler at all makes it quite loud, but it's more of a crappy sounding loud... plus then in a year or two I'd have to put it back on for Aircare. Would getting bigger diameter pipes after the muffler help? Mine are 1 7/8 inch...

Re: I want louder exhaust

look, you will probably not be satisfied with the sound that your engine's exhaust produces.
you could bolt up a ferrari exhaust and It would still sound like crap.

Yeah good point... I'm just confused as to why a glasspack didn't make my truck super loud, but it makes tons of ricers loud as hell... I hate ricers but I wouldn't mind a bit of the tone because it's a regular truck. Everybody I talked to in exhaust shops, parts stores said that a glasspack would be so loud I'd get pulled over... weird.
