What are you guys' interpretations of this epic, i just want to get a feel for what kind of literary journey i am embarking on.

it was interesting...but definitly literature...we'll never know if it is true of course, but its a healthy reminder.

It helps greatly to read an annotated version. Much of the book is highly political, and without some knowledge of the time period, much of it will be lost on you.
I'd very highly recommend the W.W. Norton annotated version: http://www.wwnorton.com/catalog/fall01/004341.htm By far the best translation I've ever seen, and facing pages have the original Italian and notes. I bid thee well on thy noble quest.

I am through Canto 7, i bought the Robert Pinsky translation. Its pretty good so far, short and to the point. Just my style. But it holds so much that everything is important. |
