Re: 1983 s-10 door hinge pin removal ?

On my 91 S-10 it is possable, yes. Any parts store should have a kit, i think mine was $5. The only thing that i suggest you be a bit carefull about is prying the spring out, i caught mine in the lip, lol. The spring is pretty stought and you should ware saftey glasses while removeing it, or find a spring compresser for it. Then there are spring clip retainers on the actual pins that need to be removed to tap the pins out. Its a fairly straight forward job, that should take about an hour tops with a large and small screwdrivers, pry bar, and a hammer.

I have a suggestion or two. First off find a long bolt (about 12") and make sure its the same diameter as the pins or a little bit smaller. At the threaded end of the bolt use a drill to make a small pointed hole just big enough that the bolt wont slip of the pin.

I just start with the bottom pin. Have someone hold the door. (I have done it by myself but its a lot easier with two people. Place the bolt on pointy end of door pin and use a (bfh) hammer to tap it all the way through. (Usually after tapping half way through the pin will pull out by hand) The retainer clip around the pin is made of spring steel and will break on its own . I never removed a spring clip before removing the pins unless I have to reuse it. With door pin kits as cheap as they are who needs to reuse them.

Now that your on the top pin someone should hold the door. You will be tapping this pin down. You should see why I said make sure the bolt your using as a driver should be long. It will stick up past the pillar to give you room to hit it with a hammer. Have the door closed about half way to remove tension on the spring and once you tap the pin down about an inch it will pop the spring loose. Pull the pin the rest of the way out and your door is off. I have been hit witht he spring a few times and its no more than dropping it on your foot which is where it usually lands.

You will see where to put the new bushings. 2 should go on one door hinge and 2 go on one truck hinge. Make sure you install the pins the same way. THe bottom one goes down and top one goes up. I have re installed the springs with out a compressor but its aggrevating. So while your at the parts store getting the door pin set see if they have free tool rental and get the compressor.. AUTO ZONE does.

Also when putting the door back on make sure the swing arm that the door spring pushes against is in the right position. If its not I think you will have to take pins out to swing it back over.

Its a real easy job. Takes me about 15 minutes. 10 if I dont replace the springs.
