Please tell me that this isn't true. If it is true then I've lost all respect I've ever had for Ferrari.

F50 Engine specs:
286.7 cubic inches displacement.
513hp @ 8500rpm

Now despite the fact that 8500rpm is a rediculous speed for an engine to develope it's peak power at, just take a look at those figures again.
That's only 1.7hp per cubic inch, and at 8500rpm!
For the love of pie, my Subaru 360 produces 1.2hp per cubic inch at 5500rpm! - what's wrong with this picture?

Yes, I'm sorry to inform you that this is true. You can't necessarily base power how good a car is on the engine size. The F40 is only 179.2ci. I'm not saying it's a bad car - it's a good car, it's just a dissapointing engine! - especially for something so expensive. I can't see why the engineers would want to have the power peak at such a high rpm, the F40 on the other hand has a much better engine in these respects.

No offence, yes it is right, a 1995 Ferrari being beaten by a 1989 Ferrari, but lets keep in mind, they didnt want to go ALL OUT on this car, the F50 was made to celebrate the 50th anniversary, if they have done the right spec limits for the car it would be just outrageous, absolutely no competition in the world for it today to race against, just take a look at the F50 GT1, and still that car was also not the full engine spec, keep in mind emissions, they didnt want to break any laws, noise and emission regulations. But, I have heard from owners, that the F50 has PLENTY of power for what it is, you just have to drive it (feel it, to believe it), something I have yet to experience

The F50 has a Formula one engine, so 500 hp is the least it can do. I'm sure it can have 800 or more if Ferrari wanted them to.

Exactly, they could of hit well over 1000 if they wanted to, basically the F50 that I would love to have, is the Koenig F50, that is my visualization of a completely nicely done F50, thats how Ferrari should have made it stock, but they definetly wouldnt of used turbos, then again wouldnt be the same specs, but oh well, and F50 is an F50.

You do realize that 8500rpm on a Ferrari is like 4500 rpms on a regular car like a Subaru or whatever. These things basically have formula 1 engines, they redline at around 10000rpm.

I didn't say it WAS a formula 1 engine, if it was it'd be a 3.5L V12 with insanely high horsepower. I was saying that it was similar. Do you know any other cars that are street legal that redline around 11000 or 12000rpm? Closest I can think of is an S2000 or a RX-8 at 9000rpm.

While that is true for modern F1 engines, the engine used in the F50 was based on the 94 V12 which had a redline of about 11-12K rpm.

The FIA changed to a 3litre formula and engine designers have gone looking for(more) power in the most logical place, the rpm's and since 95 these have gone skyward. Schumacher B195 would have had a redline of about 17K rpm and as we know now, BMW are pushing 20K rpm but with this single engine per weekend rule i think we will see a drop in these high figures to maintain reliability. But they will get over 20K soon enough if the FIA stick with the 3l formula...

Actually, formula 1 engines are 1.5-3.0 liters. but they are v-12's. they have to be so small, how do you think they redline at 19k rpms

well, ACTUALLY the modern F1 engines are 3000cc V10s and run between 18500-19200 rpm .....
