I've got a 93 Cav Z24 Convert. with 56K miles. 3.1 V6 Automatic. I bought about a year ago.
The igniton module just went out. Car was running great...very responsive, lots of power. When the module died the car just shut off while driving down the road, no other symptoms. I checked fuel pressure (40lbs) Check Engine light did not come on, but I checked for codes anyway. Nothing. Removed the module and had it tested. Showed DEAD. Bought new, (Weller Brand-AutoZone) reinstalled and car fired right up. Runs smooth... Idle is slightly lower than before, maybe 1-2 hundred RPM. The car is definitely lacking the power it had. I rechecked the part number of the module. Checks OK... I even asked if there was a special or high performance module for a Z24. Nothing...I have two questions. Could someone have previously put a better/High Perf. module in it ? Or is it possible the module is not quite right ? It acts just like the timing is slightly retarded . What does everyone think? |

Re: 93 Cav Loss of Power post Ignition Module
I think you might want to check the coils. I've heard of many GM car where the coils went out and took the ignition module with them. If the coils still have poor resistance, they will nock out your new module as well. You can pull them off and test them with a multimeter, but you will need the specs for primary and secondary resistance. Pick up a Haynes or a Chilton, it whould be listed in there.

Wouldn't there be some other symptoms if the coil(s) were bad...? It runs very smooth even under hard acceleration...just gutless
Thanks. |

Re: 93 Cav Loss of Power post Ignition Module
I was repeating what I had heard from someone knowledgable when I was tracing down a problem with my 2.4L. I was hoping it might help and since it is not an expensive option (unless you don't own a multimeter). I have a 97 which is also Distributerless. Does yours have a ditributor? If so, you can check the cap for cracks. Check the spark plug wires for resistance. Check your plugs to make sure they weren't fouled while you tested out your problem. If they are fouled, you can clean them, but I would recommend replacing them as they are so cheap.

The more I think about it... Check the plugs first.
