Neutral Safety Switch?

What is a neutral safety switch and how much would it cost to replace? I have no reverse lights and was informed that it might be the neutral safety switch.

You need to be a little more specific on the year of your truck... But lets see what we can do...

On 1st gens (84-94) the safety nutral/back up light switch is at the base of the steering column... Big white plastic frame looking thing with a couple of plugs in it...

On the second gens (95-current) it's on the side of the transmission on the detent rod (where the shift cable is attached) and has 2 plugs going into it.

The way on the 1st gens to test the back up lights is to pull the flat 2 wire plug (green and brown wires) and jump them. Your backup lights should go on. If they do, then it's the switch, if not, then you have a break in your harness somewhere...
