Turn signals/Directionals not working correctly

Hi all,

I have a bit of an ignition problem I believe.

The car is a 1988 3.0L Taurus. A few days ago the turning signals and the heater motor quit working while the car was running. If I shut the car off and turn the key on like it is running but is really not on, then they work. The instant I have the motor running they do not, with one exception, if I turn the key slightly towards the point where it may roll over the starter, then they both will work. So whenever I need to make a turn I have to twist the key a bit to run the directionals, also I do it when I need to get the heater to work (it’s a bit nippy here in Michigan)

A friend of mine that is a car dealer says has seen many heater fan toggle switches on Fords over the years and he figured it was due to something failing in the steering column.

I took the ignition apart last night and cleaned it and all, but I did not see anything wrong and put it back together. This did not change anything, I still have the same problem.

I think the problem lies deep inside the steering column. I am not sure how to get to it. I am looking at a couple of options.

One, to replace the parts needed. I am not sure how to do that.

Or two, to bypass the ignition by hot wiring the directionals so they can be used at any time, and then hot wiring the fan heater motor and installing a toggle switch on it. If the blower motor would shut off completely I would just hot wire it, but since the lowest setting is “low” it would always be running, in that case I need a switch.

If anyone has had experience with this type of thing I would appreciate any input.

Take it to the dealer and have them fix it right, sounds like a problem with the wiring.
