The big news from the Detroit Auto Show wasn't the various too cool supercars. Instead, hybrid vehicles captured center stage. As AutoWeek Online explained, "[h]ybrid powertrains figured prominently in no less than six major announcements at the Detroit show..." The hybrid vehicles displayed included SUVs and more.
Its clearl that hybrid vehicles are going to play an increasingly important role in the future of fuel economy. However, there are other advanced or even more advanced technologies still in the process of being commercialized. The goal of policy makers should not be to pick a winning technology but to let the various technologies compete in the marketplace. Ultimately, consumers will determine the best mix of technologies, vehicle capabiliites and styles to meet their needs.
