I'm hopefully getting

a 1.6 version in the next 3/4 months.

It will be my first car, although I will have been driving my mums car around for while already before I get this. Currently blooning around in a 1.4 megane, hoping the 1.6 gti will be a major upgrade speed wise......

Anything in particular I should look out for, anything obvious, hidden, anything at all ?

Thumbs up

The 205 is very reliable and not costly (except when you'll buy it because this car is well sold).
Just have a look at the classic things (maintenance, distribution strap, etc.).
And the 1.6 has very good performances.

I have a 1.6 and love it, although it has started to blow out a little blue smoke, look out for that obviously. Not many are rusty, u can get some good deals if u look.

The 205 Gti is an excellent car, fast and funny to drive, but a trap for your driving licence
Where are you from TomPack ?

dimm dimma

hello strat m8 i have a 205 1.9 gti with full dimma kit, when looking m8 go with the flow but remember when you see the car you have to do a good proper check over including the underneath of the car watch out for those rust spots , its easy to just fall in love with your first car as soon as you pull up to buy it, dont be blinded by the fact that it may look kickass. Should you get it without nice rims give me a shout as i've got some 1.9 gti rims x4 which would help you on your way, give us a reply if that was cool of me to say so

Re: I'm hopefully getting

Strat. as its your first car, try looking at a 1.4 XS alot cheaper on the insurance and if you can still get the version with the twin carbs it accelerates faster than a 1.6gti although top end is less but who ever drives at the top speed of their car? I had an XS as my first car and reg beat 1.6gti`s it was standard too. bit of a pain keeping the carbs balanced and theres less potential for after market engine mods all the usual stuff is available, exhausts suspension, wheels etc. If your heart is set on a gti then get one with no mods, totally standard, if you et a modded one its a sure sign its been thrashed and will probably cause problems in the future, much better to get a standard one and do the work yourself, at least you then know whats been done. Look out for the engine management system, if its in the dash then its a ringer (bitter experience talking here) at least thats what i was told by the dealer, could be wrong though? also check for rippled inner wings and boot floor, signs of a crash.
