AE86 questions and starlet
a bunch of questions about old toyotas
what is the best engine swap that is generally considered for the trueno/lenin/sprinter/AE86? my father suggested the turbocharged truck engine or the 4AGZE, both of which sounded alright. ueo himself drives a NA 1985, with 180 horsepower and claims that NA engines enjoy a natural advantage of supercharged/turocharged cars which make sense. i was hoping to get some advice on building a naturally aspirated AEb6 hatchback. i am not unwilling to listen to putting factory superchargers/turochargers, but nothing crazy please. also, is there not a starlet forum? or is it just called something else, those cars are awesome... thanks |

Re: AE86 questions and starlet
If you want to keep it NA, every HP you increase the power by over standard (compared to a SC or turbo) car is going to cost you roughly twice as much. If you still wish to go NA, I suggest a blacktop 20V 4AGE with matching 6 speed gearbox, fully rebuilt. Once you have done that, come back and we can talk about power upgrades.
![]() I am hoping to put a GZE in my Rolla hatch sometime in the next 18 months.

blacktop
I have heard of the blacktop, what is it out of? it is a 2 liter right? what is the typical horse/torque expectations?
what is the typical bore/stroke/sleeve setup? do they make aftermarket cams for a 1987 AE86? also, what is a good drifting suspension setup? |

Re: AE86 questions and starlet
Blacktop is out of Jap spec Corollas. It is 1600cc, just like all 4AGEs. Can't think of hp and torque figures off the top of my head - look them up.
Good drifting suspension setup is a heap of negative camber and skinny tyres with low sidewalls. If you are thinking about this project as an introduction to drifting - think again. Bad move. These cars are the cars the élite'of the drift scene use and you will have a 95% chance of fucking up badly before you skill level is high enough. Start with an SR20DET powered S13.

if i was you(which im not) i'd just swap in a redtop 16v with the basic bolt-ons, maybe carbs, and call it good.
maybe ueo was referring to na engines not having to worry about falling off the boost. 6-speed? dont know where you'd get it from, but it would cost quite a bit of money. can i buy some pot from you? if corollas were the "elite" and beginners would have a 95% of fucking up badly, then there would be about 4 left in the us, and 14 in the rest of the world. the cars have been praised for the drivers aspect, responding well to control input, and while not having incredible limits, a very fun car to drive. |

Re: AE86 questions and starlet
I am more thinking of making this a cheap car to learn on. where l live every white-trash has an 80s corlla rotting in their driveway. as far as california cars what else is cheap for drifting/streetable cars.
BTW thanks for all your help with a stupid 16-year old kid. |

Re: AE86 questions and starlet
What I am talking about re: AE86s involved in drift is that because they have significantly less power than their turbo counterparts, they need to be revved higher and a much more highly skilled controller to make sure the rpms never drop and you're always in the right gear. OK?

aaahhhhh
well then, the AE86 sounds like a great sort of car to learn on. if i can master driving a corolla, then any other car should be a breeze.
more about the blacktop: how much do they generally cost? where can i get one? what is the redtop? |
