Political Correctness gone too far
Here's one that really makes my blood boil!
http://www.cnn.com/2004/EDUCATION/01....ap/index.html "Officials disciplined students who papered their nearly all-white high school with posters advocating a white student from South Africa for the school's "Distinguished African American Student Award." WTF? The kid is African, he was probably MORE African than the other African Americans in the school, so why shouldn't he be nominated for the award? Being African is about being from Africa, by being born on the African continent, where did it ever say that a white person can't be African? That's like saying a person of color can't be German, it's ridiculous! I have nothing against people of different skin colors or ethnicities, but to tell me I can't be African because I am white? What a load of politically correct bullshit! I wish I could contact that kid's family, I would offer them money so they can sue the school district for being insensitive to their son's heritage, which is African! Sorry about this sounding like a rant, but as somebody who grew up in South Africa this really hits close to home. |

I have no doubt as to how much this upsets you. I have a coworder from Egypt and it gets his blood preasure up that the term African has been hijacked by the ill-informed to mean black. He takes pride in his heritage to one of the oldest surviving civilizations.

I've always despised political correctness. And this is probably one of the worst I've heard. I understand why your upset Ray and you have every right to be. Because being African has nothing to do with skin color, although that's what everyone makes it seem.

Anybody know who invented political correctness? Stalin. Know what else he did? Lots of other bad things...Being PC is wrong and doesn't make anything better. That's todays history lesson, folks. Tune in next week when we'll be discussing how the man who invented the Rotary engine used to be in the Young Nazi club.
BYE!

Well, at least we can tell by the responses the varying levels of maturity around here.

Sorry, freakray, but you are making assumptions pased on single posts. The logic in your comment is flawed. This may be a major issue to someone of African descent, but there are more than enough examples of 'corporate political correctness' in my home country without me getting all riled up about this one.

I don't know what you think I was referring to Taranaki, but obviously you don't know.
Obviously political correctness in any guise is a load of bullshit, there is no argument about that. Be it the case I started this thread about or any other case we come across daily, I don't care about discussing any of those scenarios here, but WTF has tuna noodle casserole got to do with it? Re: Political Correctness gone too far
Tuna noodle casserole is about as relevant to my life as some clumsy piece of well-meaning,but blatant, racism in a school a long way away.Yes,it is wrong to promote the idea that only black people can call themselves African.Just as much as it is wrong to pretend that ever Englishman who ever emigrated to New Zealand is a workshy complainer. But these are the stereotypes that we get thrown in front of us,and getting mad at them wont change them.In a world where migration is becoming more and more common, and travel is becoming ever easier,The people with the most to lose are the numbskulls who live in a world based on their own ignorance rather than their own experience. It's a waste of emotion getting angy at their simplistic attitudes to countries that they have never seen, far better to sidestep the fools and only tackle them head on when they are obstructing you in your everyday life.

What about the new p.c. argument. Hispanics are now claiming the term "illegal immigrant" is as bad as the 'N' word. WTF!!!!!!! Give me a damn break. The term 'illegal immigrant' is universal. In no way does it single out hispanics. It just seems that way b/c they flood the border like its going out of style. And there is no way in hell it can even be compared to the 'N' word. That word is extremely derogatory, and in no way is illegal immigrant derogatory. Good lord, wtf is this world coming to?
