Vibrations

Hi,
Been here before, but I guess few people have experienced vibrations. Mine are coming up through the steering column. I can also feel them on the floor.
My truck is of 2001 vintage, a K1500 extended cab with the small 4.8 liter V8, 4x4 with auto trans, 3.73 limited slip axle, running Michelin P245/75R16 LTX m+s tires.
The vibrations are felt from about 15 mph and up on blacktopped highways. The vibration seems constant and doesn't appear to get more or less with speed changes.
I think it may be transmission related, but some people have said it is the counter balanced 4.8 liter engine. I really don't know or just how to isolate it.
If anyone has any ideas, I'd surely welcome them.

Re: Vibrations

I had a similar problem, with the steering wheel vibrating like mad in my '91 Silverado. Turned out to be that one of the tires was so worn out, that it became oblong . Although I did have about 55000 miles on those tires.. oh well, it is a possibility.

Lightbulb vibrations

I had a problem with my 99 silverado that sounds similiar to yours. My friend had the same problem with his 99 sierra(GMC).Inside the steering column is a piece of equipment, I believe the term used was "1/2 shaft".It went bad In my friends truck,he took it to pontiac/GMC dealer, they changed front end parts etc...did'nt fix it.He took it to the GMC truck center. They were familiar with the problem, and changed this 2 part "1/2 shaft".That fixed it.Coincidently my truck started the same thing maybe a month or two later. He brought me a copy of his work order that it was repaired under, and I took that to the chevy dealer with my truck.I was hoping they would understand the language used on the repair order, and it would direct them to the problem.....it did.It was fixed under warranty. The problem was a rattling up the steering column, clear up to the steering wheel...........if that sounds familiar, then I hope that helps You.If not, then good luck................dan
Here's an update:In another forum I saw what I believe is possibly the correct term for that "1/2 shaft".Its called an Intermediate shaft..............Good luck!

the rattle that 99 silverado is talking about is the lower intermediate steering shaft, there is a lube kit available to fix this although your problem doesn't sound you are experiencing this.
