The pressure plate doesn't matter. You can use an 88 transmission on and d series block as long as you use an 89+ clutch disc and flywheel. Oh yah also, the 88-89 clutch is smaller than the 90 and up so if u got an 88 tranny, then purchase a 90+ clutch disc and flywheel.

I'm 100% sure it's the opposite:
88: 21 Splines
89-00: 20 Splines (d series)

for more info check out:

Why Honda did this? I got NO idea...pretty stupid if u ask me.

Re: tellin the tranny yr...........

That would be fine...just don't get one for an 88 or 89 cuz they don't grab as good....just remember, you need the flywheel and clutch disc. The pressure plate isn't specific for the yr.

Re: tellin the tranny yr...........

the pressure plate IS specific. im doing a stock swap right now on a blown headgasket engine, and the old engine is a 91 and the new engine is an 88. i got a clutch kit for a 91, but the pressure plate wouldnt attach to my new engines (88) flywheel, even though the clutch disc would fit on the input shaft. so heres the deal. if you are gonna swap to another tranny, get the flywheel while you are at it. because not only are the spline counts different on the trannies, but the bolt and dowel pin patterns on the flywheel are different as well.

i ended up having to take the flywheel offa the 91 engine and getting that turned, and then using it on the 88 engine.

Re: tellin the tranny yr...........

My ZC tranny was different than the 90-91's, and ended up needing a clutch and flywheel from a 92-95, cuz the ZC's were made in two generations, so you need to check the splines to be absolutely sure for the generation. Also, unless I'm wrong, the flywheel is different too. However, I am not 100% sure on this as a rule, it's just how mine worked out.

like everyone said, just order a clutch kit/flywheel from a 90-95 civic d series. Get either the 90-91 or the 92-95. They're the same. This way you won't have to count the splines. As long as you purchase the flywheel too, it will fit even if ur tranny is an 88.

wrong! if the tranny is an 88, you need to make sure your clutch disc will fit on the input shaft, and the 4 speed tranny has a smaller shaft size than the 5 speed. i know this because i was putting a 5 speed in a car, and everything but the clutch disc fit. i ended up having to bring the set back and get one that would fit both the input shaft and the flywheel i had already turned. things got mixed and matched, and now it works. count the splines, or just use an alignment tool to check your old clutch disc and compare it to the new disc.

Sorry about that man....yah I knew that. I just wusn't reading wut I was writing...lol...know wut I mean? Wut I really meant is if you got an 89. Yah the 88 has 21 splines on the input shaft. So ur gonna have to get a clutch kit for the 88 if that's wut u got....I knew that...damn im stupid...lol.
sorry for the confusion
