Question Gear Ratios?

I really want to know what gear ratios are. When they give you those numbers for each gear, what does that mean. What is the final drive also. And how do u know which gear ratios are better that others?
Thanks
PL

I know the answer but it's sooooooo much typing! Are you sure you can't find the info on the web? Like howstuffworks.com?
