How do I teel which model my car is? E38, etc.

I have a 2001 740iL

You tell by the model and the year. A 2001 740iL is an E38, which means it's a 7-series between 1995 and 2001 inclusively. Nice car! (E65/E66 7-series is 2002-2004 but I don't know the difference between E65 and E66.)
