Rolling Ball Sculpture

I don't know how these got into my head today...

I want one, but I'd really like to build one...

The first one I remember seeing:

Shab Levy's Gravitram at the Omniplex Science Center (Oklahoma City)

I remember it being HUGE (of course, I was smaller then...).

Many resources:
Rolling Ball Sculpture

For example:
Rolling Ball Sculpture for sale on ebay

Re: Rolling Ball Sculpture

Yea that would be a nice challenge to build one. Man if I only had the extra time and money I think I would too. )

That would be hot if you built that. Those kind of things are pretty amazing IMO.

Here's a great example of a simple one that this guy built in his garage...

Yeah, I've always wanted to make one of those. The first one I ever saw was one they had in the Logan International Airport (Boston) when I was about 8 or 9. It was huge, but another cool thing was that it was "musical". I think the creator used xylophone tiles and all kinds of other crazy stuff, so that when the ball was rolling down the track, there would be various "dings" and "dongs". If I knew how to weld (or braze or whatever), it would be fun.

They used to sell a toy kinda like that. Always wanted one, but never got it...

Check out this guy's works:

http://www.brucegray.com/htmlfolder/rollingball.html

His must be made of more substantial materials, since even just the steel ball rollnig on the rail makes such an incredible "whirrrr" sound. there are movies with sound on the individual pages, if you can take the load times...

edit: here's pic of the one you're talking about:

YES! That's the one! Wonder if it's still there? So cool to watch that. When I lived in the Boston area, my dad travelled alot for business, and sometimes he would have my mom drive him to the airport, and she'd take me along and we'd go and watch the sculpture after my dads plane took off.
