gearing and driveshafts

ive got a question for you guys...how interchangable are the camaro driveshafts, i.e. would a 1LE driveshaft fit into a V6 car or vice versa

Re: gearing and driveshafts

Well that depends. What tranny are you running? As far as I know, and I could be wrong, if the transplant driveshaft was in a camaro with a TH700R4 tranny then it will fit the same tranny. That goes for all trannies. I think that the 1LE was just a suspention option. But if your V6 had the same tranny as the one that the new driveshaft had then it should work. You should ask Texas_hotrod, he would know for sure.

Re: gearing and driveshafts

i was under the impression that the 1LE later on also offered an aluminum driveshaft. also, ive got the 4L60E which i thought was the only auto that gm put in the 4th gen camaro...i figured that if they put the shaft in other autos (those being the 4L60E) that it would fit into mine, but i was wondering if there might be length differences (which i also assume not because the V6 is pushed way back in the bay) or maybe the shaft wouldnt fit into the rear diff link up.
basically my thinking for this is why would gm makes two different types of rear-ends for the two different engines, it would cost more and be harder to manufacture...

Re: gearing and driveshafts

Ok, you have a fourth gen, still the same thing. The engine isn't really pushed back farther, it's just smaller so it looks like it is. But the trany is still mounted in the same spot. The different rear ends are really just different gears. Chevy has been doing this for a while. I'm not sure what the ratio is for 4th gen cars but an example would be the 3rd gen auto's had 2.98 gears and the 5 speeds had 3.08 gears. but they all bolt up the same to the driveshaft. But I'm pretty sure that all autmatic driveshafts are the same length.

Re: gearing and driveshafts

yup, yall are right. just make sure that if you have an auto, you get the aluminum 1LE driveshaft from another auto car. and if you have a manual, get one from a manual equipped car. the driveshaft yoke, and length of the driveshaft is different to the best of my knowledge. but like 92RS said, the only difference between rears is the gears. and if they had drum or disk brakes. but i dont think thats an issue with 4th gens. i think they all had disks.

Re: gearing and driveshafts

No, I think my 92RS that originaly had a V6 had 2.93 gears. I won't swear on it, but I'm sure it did. I'll look it up and tell ya what I find out.

Re: gearing and driveshafts

I learned something today too. Don't line up against a 2002 SS that makes a psssst sound after reving. That fucker had a twin turbo set up and embarassed the fuck out of me. Borg&werner don't just make transmitions kids.

Re: gearing and driveshafts

lol, yeah, true true. hissing V8's are bad news bears. but, the turbos were Borg Warner? or are you talking about the rear end delema? my IROC has the stock Borg Warner rear end. which has diff gears, but only by a little. i think it went like this,
Stock 2.73, 3.23, 3.42
BW 2.77, 3.27, 3.45
was the 2.93 another BW ratio i didnt know about?

Re: gearing and driveshafts

No, I'm talking BW turbos. After he kicked my ass I pulled into the gas station after him. Two of them fuckers. I'm not sure about the 2.93 being a BW ratio or not.
