Question Intermittent wipers on a 97 Ford Explorer XLT

When I use my front windshield wipers in the intermittent mode they stop halfway up the windshield. If I turn it to full function they work fine. A ford shop said the switch had to be replaced for $190 for the part alone. Any experience with this? Can I get the switch at a scrap yard?

Re: Intermittent wipers on a 97 Ford Explorer XLT

If it is the switch that controls the wipers, washer, turn signals and dimmer, it's called the multi function switch. Yes you can replace it but it'll take you a while if you're not familiar with removing the ignition switch lock cylinder. But if you're game here it is...

Disconnect battery. Remove steering column (upper and lower) shrouds. Remove ignition switch lock cylinder. Remove tilt steering lever if equipped (turn counter clockwise).Remove multi-function switch, disconnect electrical connectors. Then reinstall. Caution: disconnect battery-you do not want an accidental airbag deployment!!! It you need a manual get Haynes, lots of pictures. If not available get Chiltons. Or if you're inclined go to E-Bay and type "Ford CD" in the search box and see if any Ford Repair CDs are available. They're suppose to be the same as Ford technicians use.

I suppose that one can be found in scrap yard but remember they also have been used and how long will that last? It's a gamble. I figure that if you saved on the labor costs then you can use the money saved to buy a new part and do the job once and still be ahead.

Thanks, I found a new switch for $59. I'll look into the Haynes manual as suggested
