lights dimming
Hello All
I have a 1990 Ranger 4x4 2.9 L This just started happening, when I turn on the lights and the heater fan my lights go dim then they will brighten again I watched the chargeing gauge and it will go from charging at over 12 down to almost 6 then back again. Someone told me that it is possibly the Voltage regulator is this a possible solution or is it my alt. |

Just for starters, How are the connections on your battery posts? If you have that white buildup it may be affecting the charging ability from the alternator to the battery, which may be the reason for the guage to "flicker" up and down. Happened to me on my 2.9. After you make sure the connections are clean, you might want to have the alternator tested using a voltmeter. If that checks out OK Then I'm guessing it would be somthing else like a short in the electrical system. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply but I think that I have solved the problem. I found a leak in the heater hose that connects to the water pump, it was getting the fan belt wet and causing it to slip. I replaced the hose and tryed it out it is charging properly now, lights don't dim under a load anymore. I ran the lights the fan the radio and the four way flashers and it stayed steady at about 14amps charging.
