No One Can Figure it Out.... 94 Shadow

This is kind of hard to describe, but I'll be driving down the road and when I go and put on the gas it almost sides like its in neutral, it makes this rvvv noise. Also when I put my car in reverse it starts shaking very bad, it also shakes when Im idling. I dont know if its the transmission or what it is, I dont want to take it to a garage and spend hundreds on nothing. But its on a 94 Shadow. Also, my transmission fluid when I checked it is foamy for some reason

ohh, yeah usually when the transmission fluid is foamy, it means the filter needs to be cleaned, give that a try

Is it standard or auto? The 5 speeds were filled with 5w30 motor oil from the factory...

I'm not sure why! I just know I filled mine with tranny fluid....and a few weeks later the car was running rough, I read the shop manual and cam across a WARNING! do not use transmission fluid.... So I don't have the answer, I just know the factory fill was 5W30

3 or 4 spd auto i assume have a bad problem with the valves inside the valve body of the trans sticking and causing all sorts of problems. if it is that you will need to have it rebuilt. try changing filter first it only costs about 15$ and you only need a 10mm socket and t15 or t20 torx bit to change it.

it's probably something alot more simple than that, check your motor mounts, and check your drive shafts and look to see if the splines are striped, I had one strip on me, when I went into reverse, the car didn't want to go, the you'd here a clunck and it caught, after going back into drive , the same thing, it was like this for 6 months befor the splines completely stripped, leaving me in the middle of an intersection.

Re: No One Can Figure it Out.... 94 Shadow

every type of fluid comes with additives in it. and one additive that everything comes with is antifoam inhibitors. once the fluid has been there a while, the antifoam inhibitors will actually burn away and the fluid will start foaming. which is a big problem for lubrication. it sounds like a couple problems to me. if the fluid is bad, and it's an automatic, then your torque converter is probably slipping, causing it to do the rev thing when you hit the gas. 86shelby is right in suggesting checking the motor mounts. but for the rough idle, i would check for a vaccuum leak. when you're in reverse, and you give it gas, does it still vibrate? or just when you're in reverse and idling?

Re: No One Can Figure it Out.... 94 Shadow

I believe these cars (I have a 90 Plymouth Sundance w/ 2.5TBI) also have transmission mounts, separate of the motor mounts. Actually I have a question about my motor mounts, which I will be posting as a separate topic in a little while. What I do know though is that if your motor mounts are bad (especially the front one), your engine really jerks around when you shift from neutral to drive or neutral to reverse...a lot more than it should be jerking around. I replaced my front mount and fixed a lot of that, but I still have a little too much movement, so I think I have to replace another mount.

I think the front motor mount is like $18.99 or something at Autozone for the Dodge Shadow and $8.99 for the Plymouth Sundance. I originally bought the one for the Shadow but it was far too big for my Sundance, so the two mounts are NOT interchangeable.

They use motor oil to cut down on friction, therefor increasing gas mileage. Older cars use 80w-90, or something close to that. I'll agree with the recommendations to try filter and fluid, then the valves. Other than that it's time to replace the trans.
