tinting tail lights

sounds wierd to me but i heard on some site that someone was going to tint thier taillights and i was wondering if it would work or would the film come of with the weather? if it would work i think it would be kinda cool cause it would dim the colors of the taillights and make them more suttle. ( the colors during the day that is, not the actual lighting up of the lights with the breaks)

I doubt they were using actual window tint. They probably used a product like "VHT Night Shades." It is a transparent black tailight coating. Spray it on, and unlit your it looks black. Once the lights are on, the light shines through and you can see them fine.

http://www.planetperformance.com/pro...ialty+Coatings

This link shows a link to the product so you can see what it is. You should be able to find a single can somewhere for like $9 or so. Also, "blacking out" your tailights (with any product) may be considered illegal, even though the light shines through, due to the fact it "blacks out" the reflectors (they reflect light, not produce it, so the black out/tint would reduce the rflection of it), and I beleive you have to have at least 2 on the taillights be law. Anyways, if you want to "tinit" your tailights, that is the product you want. I've used it before once a long time ago for something, still have the can at home.

Re: tinting tail lights

go to local hobby shop and ask for some transparent paint, a small can will cost 5 bucks. they come in blue, candy apple red and smoke color. to make them last spray on coats of clear coat.

I hate those LED Windsheild Washer squiters. I call em the "I wanna be like Vin Disiel and have everything LED" mod. What's equally as bad are those valve stem LED caps that light when the tires spin. Those to things, ahhhhh, horrible. I wish they'd dis-invent them, lol.

Re: Re: Re: Re: tinting tail lights

I tinted mine with night shades and like them a lot. Dark at day, bright at night.

There's a black Integra driving around here with blacked out tails, and those tail light covers with circles in them on top of the paint. Looks all black but when they hit the brakes only circles light up. Pretty original I guess..

I have a can of that stuff around my house. Long before they made black housed anything, I smoked out my corners, etc, using that stuff. It turned out alright. You didn't use too many coats, did you. How many coats did you use? I can sill see thru to the red, but it is darker. You found a good medium...not too dark, like black, just enough to smoke em to darken the tone.

Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: Re: tinting tail lights

Actually they are kinda black but in that pic the sun was right on them. On a darkish rainy day they almost look the same color as the rest of the car, and all you can see are the clear turn signals - which is the look I was going for. I put A LOT of extremely light coats on them so they wouldn't fog up. Took me about a day to do.. long time, but I didn't want to regret doing shoddy work.

No kidding, everywhere you go, it's alomost always shoddy work. I don't mean stuff like this, but anything, bodywork, paint work, body repair, engine repair, etc.....they always f*ck something up with shoddy work, either that or they manage to f someting up completely oppiste of what they were suppose to do...it gets annoying and leads to more DIY stuff, lol. Which brings us back to your point, the last thing you want when you are doing it yourself is shoddy work. Anyways, it looked good. My buddy wants me to do his with my can of niteshades at home, by he only wants it slightly smoked, not all blacked out...I figure maybe 2 light coats or so.
