Need more Speed, B18B1 Powered 95 Civic ex
I recently swapped a B18B1 engine into my 95 civic ex. I have a few performance things such as CAI, Airmass Header, Adjustable FPR, and a heavy foot. My car just wasnt quick enough for me so I gutted it - I am using a coupe so I really didnt notice that much, its just like letting one person out of your car. I thought about selling it and buying a V-8 car but after swapping cars with my buddy (96 Mustang GT) I realised how much gas I was spending, I would go to the next town and with my foot it would take me like 1/8+ tank. We raced and our cars are about dead even in the 1/4 but I blow by him on the highway. I put about 3,000 miles a month on my car so I need reliablity. Currently my motor has about 80,000 miles total.
As winter is near I am not going to be doing heavy mods, just purchesing them. First thing I plan to buy is a Aluminum Flywheel and a cheaper Stage 1 clutch. I am a college student taking a automotives program this upcomming summer we have to rebuild a engine for one semester - Far away but will give me a reason to do some upgrades.
I am debating now if I should upgrade to a turbocharger, I could have it paid off by probably Febuary. Then I need to save up for my rebuild, would I be better off rebuilding and then turbo'ing? I would like to run constant 13.5's on street tires, still maintaining reliability and good gas milage.
For the rebuild I was thinking of possibly going with a B16 Head and creating the LS/Vtec conversion, but many people seem to say that the stock LS head ported will make more power then a Vtec in a Turbo application. I found some places that will sell a long block B16 out of the Cable type Civic's for less then $1000, that will give me the vtec head and if I need any other internal parts for future projects. Will this head work on a OBD1 motor? I would be purchesing a Aftermarket Intake Manifold and TB anyway. Now for about $500 I can Get a B20 Block, then also get the older B16 and swap that head on, but will I gain much from my B18B1 engine? I read somewhere that I could use a B20 Block, B16 Head, and a B16 Crank to still maintain a good R/S ratio, Would this work? Would I benifit from it? I am on a Limited budget but I do not have a price set, I buy stuff as the money comes in usally spending most of my pay cheak on my car.
Please help me deside what would be the best combo for me. What type of performance would I be looking at with a cheaper turbo setup on my engine as it is now, running say 5-6PSI. last time I was at the track I ran 15.39 @ 92.12 mph with a R/T of 1.1 and a 60' of 2.6. I did a little tweaking to my FPR and it feels like I may be a little bit quicker now. I do have a Nitrous kit that is currently installed in my 88 Fiero Formula; I was thinking about swapping it in but even though I ran about 15 bottles in my Fiero im just afraid of the reliablity of my civic as I need it to always be running good.
Thanks
Kyle
