Engine Noise
A few weeks ago I purchased a 2001 Grand Prix SE with 31,000 miles. Two days after driving the car, I started hearing a noise coming from under the hood. The noise is a constant clicking sound, and is loudest in the morning when the engine has cooled down for 12 or so hours. At first I thought it might go away after an oil change but it got worst. The noise is a bet louder from the right side of the engine (by the belt). It sounds as if two metal pieces are grinding against each other. When the engine worms up the noise lowers, but I can still hear it. So far, I have not noticed any performance problems; I can feel the power and response once I hit the gas pedal.
Few days ago I took the car to the dealership, but they could not figure out the problem. Off course they only gave it a 15 minute inspection. The manager told me that they will need to open the engine before they can determine the cause. He also said that if the problem was caused by bad driving, then the warranty is void and I have to pay for the repairs. I have a feeling that he’ll tell me it is not a manufacturer defect even though it is. Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Also, how can I be sure that whatever the dealer tells me is the truth? Does GM respond to customer complaint or will they dismiss me? Your responses are appreciated |

Re: Engine Noise
Do you have a non-dealership mechanic you trust? If so, I'd take it there and have them check it out. Shouldn't cost too much and if they can figure it out, it would help to go back to the dealership with the info. Sounds like the problem could be lifters - best I can do without hearing it.

GM has a habitual problem with this kind of noise. It sounds like it is coming from a lifter and usually goes away as the engine warms up. From what I know, there is no known solution. Unless you want to replace all the lifters and possibly rockers.

Re: Engine Noise
Just a somewhat relevant question....what motor do you have? 3800 or 3100?

Re: Re: Engine Noise
It’s a 3100 engine.
I got a chance to take the car to a mechanic I know and he said it is a lifter problem. My concern now is with the dealer; I think he is going tell me that the problem is not covered under the warranty, and since he will have the engine open at that point I will not have a choice but to pay for the repairs. I have an appointment on December 8, 2003 and I will keep you posted. Quote:
